new friends and new places to see
It was their first day out of the nursery! Hailkit opened her eyes to sunshine, and squirmed against Whitefur's side. She couldn't wait to see the camp. Arcticpool had told them so many stories about RavenClan, and she finally got to see it for herself. She worked her way out of the nest and batted at Whitefur's muzzle. "It's time to go outside? Right? Right?!" she cried. The she-cat opened her eyes wearily. Whitefur seemed sad and tired sometimes, but Hailkit didn't know why. She looked down at Hailkit like she was lost. "I suppose it is," Whitefur murmured, pushing to her paws. "Come along, then."

Everkit was still a little wobbly on her legs, but as her coordination increased, so did her curiosity for the world outside of the nursery's walls. While the characteristic kitten-blue in her eyes had never faded, she had grown larger. Her coat would clearly fill into something longer and fuzzy, but for now...she looked about as awkwardly fluffy as a young owl. Tufts of kitten fur stuck out at all sorts of odd angles, and it snagged on everything!
Lifting her head lazily, a feeling of excitement and anxiousness pulsed through her tiny frame when her sister eagerly asked to leave the nursery. Seeing the world outside of the walls of the nursery was so tempting, but...those big cats that visited the nursery from time to time were so scary!
With her little tail tucked between her hind legs, Everkit nervously skittered behind Whitefur, practically clinging to her ankles. "I-Is it scary out there?" She attempted to peer up at their foster mother from behind her legs, eyes as round as a full moon. "...We won't get squished, right?"

Whitefur let out a low rumble of amusement, shaking her head at Everkit. "No, little one," she murmured, stepping out to the entrance and sitting down outside.
Hailkit looked at Everkit with wide eyes. "We'll be okay," she whispered, licking her sister's shoulder before turning and bouncing out the entrance. She blinked in the sunlight, nearly retreating into the dark of the nursery again. It was so bright, and so big! Big, colorful shapes moved about, and there were so many smells it hurt her nose. She blinked until things seemed to be alright, and then stepped forward nervously. "What is it all?" she asked, eyes wide.
"That's camp," Whitefur answered, grooming herself as she watched them. "Go explore, you two. Stay together, and listen to the warriors."

The kitten found some reassurance in Whitefur's words, but she could still feel her heart pounding in her delicate chest. However, she found significantly more comfort in her sister- the cat she loved more than anything else in the world. They had only known each other for almost two brief moons, but Everkit already knew they'd be best friends forever and ever.
Afraid to be left behind, the small feline darted after the queen, only to hesitate at the nursery exit. Would it really be ok? Whitefur wouldn't lie...right?
Once more, she scurried forward before she was blinded by the morning light, causing Everkit to stumble in her stride before she finally found herself beside her sister. She squinted as she glanced around, feeling overwhelming small in a world so large and unknown. She began to feel dazed, like a sudden dizziness had set upon her. She rocked upon her paws for a few brief moments until she finally found herself nestled into Hailkit's soft fur, clinging onto her like a tick.
Warriors. They sounded terrifying.
"...I hope the warriors aren't hungry for kits."

Hailkit pressed against Everkit as well, finding comfort in her sister's presence. Fear warred with curiosity, but eventually the latter won out. "Of course they're not!" she replied, with more confidence than she felt. She stepped out a bit further into the clearing, shrinking at all the looks they were recieveing. "L-let's..." she muttered, glancing around to figure out where she wanted to go. "Let's go there!" She nodded towards a den and darted towards it, practically crashing inside. She bumped into something big and soft, and screamed.

Arcticpool was just about to exit the warrior's den when something bumped into her leg and let out a scream. Taking a step back in shock, her fur raising slightly at the alarm, she relaxed as she noticed that it was a kit before it registered just who it was. "Hailkit, are you okay?" she asked, worried that she was injured as she stepped forward again and lowered her head to gently nose at her sister's fur.

She didn't even look to see where they were going.
Everkit knew one thing for sure: she was going to stick to her sister, just like Whitefur ordered. As soon as Hailkit began to run off, Everkit immediately bolted after her, working her tiny legs as hard as she possibly could to close the gap between her and her littermate. Her eyes were locked on her sister's pale coat, completely unaware of the growing shape of a nearby warrior.
When her sister screeched, Everkit was like a roach exposed to sunlight. With every hair on her body standing up, the kitten turned tail and booked it to the nearest hiding spot, which happened to be a nearby rock. She felt bad for feeding her sister to the wolves, or whatever it was they ran into, but her instincts kicked in before she could even properly react.

Hailkit stared up at Arcticpool with wide eyes, gasping for breath and shaking. As soon as her mind cleared, and she recognized her sister, she slumped with relief. “Yes,” she mumbled, pressing against Arcticpool’s legs. “I was scared.” She now noticed the clear abscence of Everkit. “Where’s Ever?” she murmured.

Arcticpool gave a purr of relief before casting her gaze around at Hailkit's question, wondering herself where Everkit went. Taking in the scents, she caught Everkit's scent and followed it the few steps to the rock "Everkit?" she called softly, her bi-colored eyes soft with affection.

She took a few, deep breaths in to calm herself down and slow her racing heart. After a while, her mind began to clear and her concerns for Hailkit outweighed her fear. She peered over the rock cautiously before spotting Hailkit's familiar coat among a warrior she'd seen before. What was her name?
Oh! It was their older sister, Arcticpool!
Her name was so pretty, it was very suiting. Everkit was relatively certain that she liked this big cat, so she decided that it was safe to come out from her hiding. With her head bowed in guilt, she scooted back over to her sisters.
"I'm sorry that I ran, Hailkit, I didn't mean to abandon you! I still love you, I promise! Do you forgive me?"

Hailkit bounded towards her sister cheerfully, nuzzling her as she purred loudly. "It's okay!" she chirped. "I love you!" She circled back to look up at Arcticpool, eyes shining. "We're out of the nursery! For the first time!" she said, her earlier excitement returning. She'd forgotten what exactly she was excited to see, but suddenly she burned with the desire to see something new. She wiggled as she wove her way through Arcticpool's legs, wondering if their big sister would stay with them as they explored.

Everkit released an exaggerated sigh of relief when Hailkit admitted that she reciprocated that feeling and bond of sisterly love. She was happy to know that she'd still be sticking by her side through everything, the kitten was uncertain if she'd manage to survive even the nursery without her. After their little reunion, Everkit stared up at Arcticpool with wide eyes. "Can you keep us safe from all the big scary cats?" She spoke in almost a whisper, as if the sight of her sister had taken her breath away. Would they get that big some day?

Arcticpool watched the two kits with a soft expression on her face, she was so glad that they seemed to have a close bond, one she hoped they kept. Her eyes twinkled with amusement as Hailkit wove between her legs, the young she-kit excited about exploring. Turning her gaze to Everkit as she spoke, Arcticpool gave a small purr "Of course I can little one, but all these big scary cats won't ever hurt you. They will protect you, I promise. You never have to be scared of the cats that are in this camp" she assured softly, letting her tail sweep around to brush gently against Everkit's side.

"Protect us from what?" Hailkit asked, eyes wide as she bounced a few pawsteps away from her sisters. "Are there monsters? How big is the world outside the camp? Does it go on forever and ever? Has anyone ever walked all the way to the end?" She was practically dashing in circles as she spoke. Her gaze was darting all around, and she started at everything that moved too quickly, but recovered almost instantly from the shock. "There's so much here!"

Everkit wished that she could share her sister's excitement, but fear dug its claws into her heart and burrowed into it like a parasite, ever-remaining and refusing to let go. She tried her hardest to find solace in the warrior's words, yet nothing was there, aside from her anxiety. "I-I don't think I'll ever get that big..." Shuffling her paws bashfully, Everkit lowered her head and kitten-blue gaze to the earth. "...Besides, if my legs grow as long as yours, my head'll look funny, 'cause every other part of me is small. And I'd just have these weird long legs, kinda like those icky spiders."

Arcticpool could only twitch her whiskers in amusement at Hailkit's question "You'll find out everything later on little one" she mewed, "though no one has walked to the end of the lands, we only have a part of the whole." Her gaze shifted to Everkit as she spoke, Arcticpool gave a small purr and gently brushed her tail over the young kit's back "You'll grow as you are meant to, and you'll look just as beautiful as you do now dear one." she mewed softly "If I can even say so, you look like you take after Raincloud's build, she had long legs but looked amazing as I'm sure you will"

Arcticpool's answer essentially shut Hailkit up as she paced behind her sisters in absolute wonder, thinking of the size of the world. If warriors hadn't found the end, did it even exist? Could she find it? How far would she have to walk? She slowly tuned back in as Arcticpool finished describing Raincloud, suddenly wondering if she looked anything like her mother. She wasn't white like her sister. "Were all the warriors as small as us one day?" she asked, knowing it had to be true, but finding it hard to imagine someone as strong and big as her sister could've been a tiny kit.

Everkit felt her heart twist in her chest when their older sister mentioned their mother. It was a shame she never got to set eyes on her, but deep down, the kitten was confident that she'd reunite with the queen she never met, with time. She knew very little about Raincloud for now, but she believed with every ounce of her being that their mother would never give up on them. She was positive that she was up in the stars now, watching them take their first few steps on the world.
That didn't make anything in this new world any less scary for Everkit, unfortunately.
Now that all these questions were ok to be asked, the gray furball became curious of her own existence. "Arcticpool?" She peeped up once more, tilting her head to the side curiously. "Where do kittens come from?"

Arcticpool gave a small smile at Hailkit "yes, in fact I was even smaller than you at your age" she mewed, remembering her own kithood, though she was only taking in the fact that she was the runt of her own siblings. Her gaze snapped over to Everkit, slightly panicked at the question, "umm" she racked her brain trying to find answer for the small kit, her ears flicking. "They come from love dear one" she finally settled on, hoping it would satisfy the curious kit.

Hailkit was astounded by the answer. Arcticpool was smaller than them? She looked down at the ground and then up at her sister, her mouth hanging open. Arcticpool answered Everkit's question weird. Hailkit had no idea why. Love was a good thing. She guessed it made sense. That way only parents who loved kits would have them. "Where can we go in the camp?" she asked, looking over at Everkit. They ought to go everywhere they could! Then they would know their way around, and they could go out on their own.
