A chilly breeze rippled through Waspsting's black fur as he crossed the camp to wait at the entrance for his new apprentice, Ivypaw. The sky was full of fast moving clouds creating unusual patterns and carrying with them a promise of rain. It's better than snow, he thought as he looked upward. The early morning sun was just now rising but was obscured by the clouds although it managed a few times to shoot an occasional light beam between the gloomy clouds. Waiting gave him time to think. Never having mentored before, the black warrior was determined to do his best to train Ivypaw in the ways of the warrior.

Ivypaw, meanwhile, couldn't be said to be the most... er... proper of apprentices. She talked a big game, but the morning had her dreaming about everything else besides becoming a warrior. One of the most important being the really tasty rabbit that she would have caught, had the tiny hole in the den's ceiling not decided to drop some water on her forehead. She glanced up, irritated, but it was only when a second and third drop fell on her head that she resigned herself to not getting anymore sleep. This wouldn't have been a thing in the nursery. For StarClan's sake, she almost wished her punishment for leaving camp a moon ago had been to remain in the nursery another moon. At least she would have dry fur there.
Exiting the den, her eyes surveyed the camp, and almost immediately fell on her mentor, Waspsting. She didn't know him well, only remembering that he was her mother's brother, but that was about it. The more important thing was that he was there, and probably waiting for her. At that moment, her stomach audibly growled, and she knew that making eye contact with him would be a bad idea. Slinking forward, she pretended not to notice him as she sat on the far side of the fresh-kill pile, dragging out a measly mouse and immediately digging in.

A sound issued from Waspsting's chest, half growl, half sigh, when he saw Ivypaw at the fresh kill pile. He saw her cross the camp but for some reason she wouldn't look his way and now he knew why. Eating of all things on her first day of training! He was up on his feet and soon was standing in front of Ivypaw looking down upon her. "What do you think you're doing? Unless I'm mistaken, you're an apprentice now and no longer a kit. Here's your first lesson in the Warrior Code. Queens, elders, and kits eat before everyone else. So here's your first assignment. Take that mouse," he tapped the mouse she was eating with his paw, "and take it to the nursery for the kits. You'll eat after everyone else has been fed. Then meet me at the camp entrance."

When his shadow fell over her, Ivypaw didn't think to look up, hoping that it was just another clanmate coming to take their share. She stiffened in annoyance as he went on, finding his /reasons/ for her not eating to be totally unjustified. Just because she was an apprentice meant she couldn't have a meal? That she didn't deserve it? Nice to know that the moment she hit the six moon mark she stopped being important enough to feed.
Without even a huff, she picked up the mouse and carried it over to the nursery, dropping it into one of the empty nests. There was barely anyone in here at the moment, and those that were, were still sleeping. The mouse would probably be stale by the time they got to it anyway. She managed to take one more bite of it before she left the nursery, keeping a leisurely pace as she padded towards the camp entrance. Ivypaw wouldn't be rushing unless she had to.

Waspsting watched as Ivypaw walked to the nursery with the half eaten mouse before he went over to the entrance to wait for her - again. A frown crossed his features when he saw her lackadaisical approach. Not knowing his niece very well, he didn't know if she was not feeling well or just plain lazy. "Come on, hurry up! Or are you sick?"

Sick? That was an idea. Could she fake it to get out of training? It seemed entirely possible, and she was sure that some of her clanmates wouldn't look too fondly on another for forcing a cat to train when they were not well. But quick as that thought came up, it dissipated. No way was anyone going to believe her over Waspsting. It just wasn't gonna happen. "No... not /really/," she said, pausing only slightly in the hope that maybe he would at least take her the slightest bit seriously.

"So then, you must have a case of 'first day jitters', right?" the black tom asked. Not waiting for an answer he went on. "Well I have a cure for that, getting started! First on the agenda is a tour of our territory. You'll have to get very familiar with our land, good places to hunt, places to avoid, and very importantly our borders with the other clans. A good warrior knows every pawstep of our home and knows when something is not quite right with it. By the time you're finished with your training, you'll be able to walk around the territory with your eyes closed and know exactly where you're at. Let's go." Waspsting led the way out of the camp.

(did you still want to continue/finish up our threads on wf?)
Ivypaw would have very much liked to reply, but it seemed like one of Waspsting's teaching methods involved /never stop talking/. She couldn't even get a word in edgewise. It wasn't even super important stuff--mostly basics about her learning about the territory, and therefore being able to travel /through/ the territory. Strange concept, huh?
She didn't voice these thoughts, even when he finished, finding herself the slightest bit amused that he could go on and on about something that he could have summed up in a sentence. The irony was not lost on her as she reluctantly padded along, prompted to follow simply out of curiosity rather than any real eagerness to have him show her everything. In fact, she could probably do a good enough job on her own if she didn't have someone else dragging her here and there.

(Sorry about that. I forgot to keep checking the old site. How about we continue with "A hunt in the cold" but drop the other two threads because Ivy and Desert are apprentices now?)
The black warrior led the way north from the camp hugging the rocky mountains to their right. Curious about her silence, Waspting asked, "You seem awfully quiet for an apprentice. Fox got your tongue? You have any questions?" He wondered about Ivypaw's sullen attitude.
(Are the territory maps on this site? I couldn't find them.)

(I would like it if perhaps we could continue/finish the RavenClan kits thread? Mostly because I imagine there wasn't much left and I like the idea that the kits got in trouble right before becoming apprentices. And yes, the maps are still here. Individual ones are found on specific Clan/group pages.)
It was actually funny, Ivypaw of all cats keeping quiet. But it was all she could really do, should she wish to keep all of her whiskers from getting chewed out. It was a surprisingly mature outlook, but as soon as Waspsting spoke, all thoughts of remaining silent quickly disappeared. "You didn't seem so eager to hear me speak before," she pointed out, noting that he hadn't even really given her the chance before sending her off to the nursery. Lifting her head, she finished, "Didn't think you'd wanna hear it now."

(All I see are broken link symbols on those pages. Sure, we can continue those threads too.)
"Never said I didn't," Waspsting meowed. "Besides one of the best ways to learn things is to ask questions." He looked at Ivypaw and wondered what was going on in her mind. Did she even want to train? From what he could guess from her attitude and body language, she'd rather be elsewhere.

(Sorry about that, the source where I got the pics kind of got screwed up. They should work fine now.)
Ask questions? Ivypaw stared at Waspsting, almost too long, before asking, "Why can't we do something more /fun/?" Bluntness was her strength, but it wasn't just a question to annoy him--she legitimately didn't see why they were just touring the territory. Couldn't they do different things at once? It would take /ages/ for her to become a warrior if all they did was one little thing each day.

(Thanks! I can see them now.)
"Seeing an entirely new land, well new to you being inside the camp all your life, isn't fun? I thought all kits dreamed about seeing what it looked like outside the barrier walls. I know I did." Then he remembered hearing about her little 'adventure' with some other kits this past Leafbare. "Oh, yes, that's right. This isn't your first time out of camp."

(I apologize, my computer is apparently going through a rough phase in its life and likes to freeze on me almost constantly now. cx)
As he went on and on, Ivypaw couldn't will herself to feel any excitement at the prospect of "exploring." Alone, she would have loved it, but from what she heard from the other apprentices, "exploring" for a mentor meant more like "let's show our apprentice every shard of grass and every rabbit hole." Surprisingly, it wasn't enough to tempt her.
She was only partially listening, wondering if he may try to convince her further beyond his own bias, but she found herself bristling slightly when he brought up the incident that had her confined to the camp until her apprenticeship. "I learned a lot then, I can learn more now if ya have anything /else/ to do."

(No problem. Very understandable.)
Waspsting was taken aback at Ivypaw's insinuation she could learn more without him but he didn't show it. He narrowed his eyes and came close enough to her that their noses were almost touching. "I don't like your attitude. It's not conducive to learning the warriors path. I'll give you two choices," he said in a surprisingly calm voice. "You can continue to learn about our territory by touring it with me or you can get some mouse bile from our medicine cat and remove the ticks off of Spottedeye and Brokentooth." He backed up one step as he waited for her decision.

Ivypaw's eyes flashed angrily when he got closer, put off by the fact that he was willing to get into her face that much just to tell her he didn't like what she was saying. He had wanted her to speak, hadn't he? Apparently he hadn't been prepared for all she might have to say. Her eyes widened when he followed up with the thread, and let out an angry huff that didn't match the furious look in her eyes. "Whatever," she mumbled, barely audible as she dragged her gaze to her paws. If he wanted her to stay quiet, then she would. She wouldn't go back and forth.

Waspsting's tail waved behind him as he waited for Ivypaw's decision. He thought he heard her say, 'whatever', but he wasn't sure. "Well, what have you decided? Tour our territory or remove ticks?" He didn't have all day to stand around arguing with a disagreeable apprentice. There was still plenty of work to be done.

"Whatever the mentor decides, I suppose." It was a short response, curt and without any other questions or suggestions. If he wanted to waste time and show her every stop in the territory, she would follow him like a good apprentice, play the part and maybe get to go back to camp and actually find something more entertaining. She could be sure that her denmates would hear about her escapades--or, in today's case, lack thereof.

Wasptail wasn't pleased with Ivypaw's attitude and hoped she'd grow out of it as her training progressed. "Come on then," he said as he started walking toward the rabbit meadow. When he was almost there, he stopped before a small pile on the ground. The odor made him screw up his nose in disgust. "Fox dung!" he hissed. "And I mean real fox dung. This is bad."

Ivypaw wasn't thrilled, but she didn't ask any more questions as she padded along, enjoying the territory with as much enthusiasm as a cat who was being dragged through it could. She wanted to explore around--see things for her own eyes. It was frustrating enough to curl her lip, but the smell that reached her nose was enough for her to scrunch up her nose entirely. "Gross!" she snapped, taking a few rapid steps back while covering her nose with a paw. "What do we do with it?" The dung, that is. Her first priority was getting the horrid stench away.
