Dreamfeather shook out her fur as she slipped out of the warriors den, noting that it was halfway to sunhigh and hoped that Desertpaw was up and about. She made her way to the apprentices den, her ears flicking with some nerves. The plan was to take him out for an introduction to battle training, having spent the time since his appointment as her apprentice working on hunting. She could admit that she was worried that her missing an eye would effect her ability to train an apprentice in the ways of battle but was also determined to give Desertpaw the best possible chance of becoming a great warrior.

A rustling sound came from the elders den and Desertpaw emerged with some old bedding moss which he deposited behind the den. Brokentooth had followed the apprentice out. "It's so good to see young'ns takin' care of us older cats. Thanks for the fresh bedding."
"It was nothing," Desertpaw replied, spitting out old moss from his mouth. "You spent a lot of time with me telling me stories when I was a kit." Just then he noticed Dreamfeather at the apprentices den. "I gotta go," he told his grandfather as he took off toward his den. "My mentor is looking for me. I'm coming, Dreamfeather!" He was eager for today's lesson, his first time battle training!
"Young'ns these days!" Brokentooth grumbled. "Always in such a hurry."

The sound of pawsteps and then Desertpaw's voice had Dreamfeather turning to see the young tom coming from the elders den. She spotted Brokentooth standing outside and gave a small dip of her head to the elder before focusing once more on her apprentice. "Glad to see you up and about" she greeted with a small smile "let's get going, we've got a patrol later on so want to get some training in before then" she mewed as she beckoned with her tail as she started towards the camp entrance.

Brokentooth returned Dreamfeather's greeting with a nod of his own. Then he found a patch of sunshine near his den and settled down to groom his coat.
"A patrol too?" Desertpaw asked with eagerness in his voice. He couldn't get enough exploring of their territory. Probably came from being cooped up inside the camp all his life. Well except for that one time he and some other kits had sneaked out, but he wasn't going to count that. "Will it be a hunting or a border patrol?"

"Border patrol, we'll be going along the outsider border" She mewed as she led the way to the training clearing, her ears flicking as she listened to see if there was anyone else occupying the space. She enjoyed the feeling of the soft ground, knowing that it was one of the reasons the area was used for battle training. Turning to face Desertpaw, she studied him for a moment before speaking "For now, i want you to attack me, try and get me down on the ground. Trust your instincts and intuition" she mewed.

Desertpaw was thrilled to hear it was a border patrol they were going on later. Maybe they'd even see a strange cat! He was now listening to Dreamfeather's instructions. "Instincts and intuition," he repeated as he watched his mentor, trying to size her up. Then suddenly he ran forward and tried to slam his body weight into one of her shoulders hoping the force would knock her over.

Dreamfeather watched as Desertpaw sized up before he darted forward, she took note of what she thought he was going for and figured that once he was bulkier it would work. She shifted her body just so that even though he did hit her shoulder, it wasn't a full on impact and merely had her stumbling to the side a bit before she whipped around to face him once more. "Try again, look for the weak spots on a cat. Until you build up the muscle and have the force to bowl your opponent over you want to look for other ways to knock them down"

Desertpaw was disappointed that his attack hadn't worked. "Okay," he replied as he watched Dreamfeather carefully. I have to try something different, he thought. But what? Suddenly an idea came to him. As quick as it did, he launched his attack. Running forward, he leaped for her back.

Dreamfeather had to admit she didn't expect the play and a grunt was driven from her as Desertpaw landed on her and shoved her into the ground. She gave a purr "very good Desertpaw" she mewed, her eye shining slightly with both excitement of the spar and pride with her apprentice.

"Really?" the sand colored apprentice asked excitedly. He did something right and was extremely pleased over Dreamfeather's praise. "How would one defend from such an attack?" He felt there had to be a defense that Dreamfeather chose not to use. Desertpaw bounced lightly with anticipation.

Dreamfeather sat up one Desertpaw had gotten off, smiling at his excited expression "really" she mewed. Her ears twitching at his question "The best defense for that move is to drop and roll, forcing your opponent to jump off or risk getting crushed." She explained, "since theres nothing to defend from your opponent rolling, the best you can do is cause as much damage with your claws in the time that you are in the position to do so."

Nodding his head thoughtfully, Desertpaw soaked in the information. "That makes sense," he mewed. "So in a battle I'd have to watch out for a cat to drop and roll and do as much damage before I leap away. I think I got it." He smiled as he learned a very useful piece of information. "Teach me more," he pleaded.

Dreamfeather could only give a small grin as she stood up "alright, the next move I'm going to show you is a simple defensive move. Its called the duck and twist. Its exactly like it sounds, when you've got an opponent coming at you that you know can knock you down, you can either jump out of the way or do this." she explained, her body shifting subtlety during her explanation until she ducked down and pushed off with her paws, sending her body rolling until she came up into a crouch, her claws at the ready and body tense to move at a moments notice.

"Cool move!" Desertpaw mewed in admiration. He had never seen a cat maneuver in such a fashion before. "I hope I can do it." Trying to remember everything he just saw, the apprentice ducked down and pushed off with his paws, but instead of sending his body rolling, he flopped over in an undignified thud, landing on his side. He felt the skin under his facial fur grow warm with embarrassment and was glad no other cat besides Dreamfeather was there to witness his mistake. "I'm sorry," he mewed contritely. "What went wrong?"
(Sorry I missed this thread.)

Dreamfeather trotted over "its alright Desertpaw, everyone takes time to learn. Took me a couple of tries to get this down" she explained as she gently nudged him up. "Now, when you get down into teh crouch, you don't want to just push off with your paws right away" she explained as she crouched down again, going thru the motions at a slower pace "what you want to do is to bend your shoulder down and then push off the ground with your opposite legs first adn then follow thru with the remaining legs to give momentum to complete the roll" she explained just before she showed the move again, this time going slow and exagerating the way that she first lowered her right shoulder and then pushed off with her left legs to start the roll, her right legs pushing right before her back hit the ground, giving her enough momentum to complete the roll.
