It had barely been a moon since Brookcloud's death, and now Driftfire felt like the world had fallen out beneath her feet for the second time. After a few days of feeling unwell she'd gone to visit Whispermoon, and the medicine cat had told her she was expecting kits with a smile on her face like she was breaking the best news Driftfire had ever recieved. She didn't blame her for thinking that; she and Tumblefoot had been mates for a long time, they'd spoken of having a family, this was all that most couples ever dreamed of. But all Driftfire could focus on was the panic in her chest that she'd kept in check while speaking to Whispermoon, but had broken free the moment she'd left the den. She had to find Tumblefoot. She had to find him /now/.
To her relief it barely took a second for him to appear, walking through the camp entrance on the tail end of that morning's border patrol. Why was it that terrible things always happened when he was on a patrol. Without caring what the other cats on the patrol thought, she sprinted over to him with her chest heaving and desperation in her eyes. "I need to talk to you," she said, her voice cracking miserably as she fought the urge to just bury her face in her chest and pray to StarClan for everything to disappear.

It had been a relatively easy morning, with nothing new on the patrol other than remarking the border and just enjoying the early morning warmth. Tumblefoot enjoyed those mornings, but he enjoyed getting back to camp to spend time with Driftfire even more. So by nature the first face he sought out upon returning to the camp with the patrol was his mate. The sudden way she ran to him, fear seeming to sour the air around her, her beautiful eyes shimmering with desperation, it frightened him. Much the way he had seen her after Brookcloud had died, and instantly he was alert, smile slipping from his face to be replaced with concern and worry. "Driftfire? What's wrong?"

She almost blurted it out there and then, but with the rest of the Clan watching she couldn't bear to. She couldn't have them know of her shame yet, couldn't deal with their inevitable thoughts if they knew what she knew. That the mentor who had killed her apprentice shouldn't be trusted to be a mother. She agreed with them but there was nothing she could do about it now. Words were lost on her though so she just nudged his shoulder with her tail as she walked in the direction of the camp entrance, glancing back at him with miserable eyes as she hoped he'd follow her. She was so deep in her anxious spiral though that she'd wouldn't have been very surprised if he didn't though, not through a lack of trust in her mate but a lack of belief in herself.
