It was far from the first time that Poppykit had been entranced by herbs and the like, since Whispermoon had been in and out of the Nursery plenty of times before, but it was the first time that she'd been allowed something to do with it though. She'd gone with her mother to Whispermoon's den that morning for a thorn stuck in her pad, and she'd asked the medicine cat so many questions about the herbs she'd had laid out on the den floor that she'd given Poppykit a bundle of old leaves for her to sort out herself. As a result she'd been sat outside the den for over an hour, going through the leaves she'd been given and working out what was too old and what she could pass back to Whispermoon through the den entrance. Any other kit might have found it boring or pointless, but to Poppykit it felt like she'd been given the most important job in the world.

Yarrowkit spent the morning practicing her self-taught fighting moves, dueling whatever sticks and leaves she came across. She was almost an apprentice, so of course she was busy preparing. After growing tired and bored of what she was doing, she stopped to looked around. There had to be something she could do to pass the time. She was listless and restless every day, and every day she became more daring in what she did. Eventually she spied Poppykit on the other side of camp, leaves piled at her paws. Yarrowkit grinned, then ran over, dodging the cats in the middle of camp. When she was near, she leaped and scattered all of the leaves in front of her sister. She landed neatly on her paws, turned to face Poppykit, and stuck her tongue out.

Poppykit shrieked with alarm as a grey blur filled her vision, scrabbling backwards and shielding her face to avoid whatever had just thudded past her. When she opened her eyes she saw the herbs first, her face falling with despair at the work she'd just lost, before she looked up and saw her sister stood a taillength away with a smug expression on her face. It was obvious who the perpetrator was then. "Yarrowkit!" she shouted crossly, flicking her tail where a few dried leaves had got stuck on her fur. "What did you do that for? I spent all morning sorting those out!" Her misery over the scattered leaves was forgotten for a moment under the anger and frustration as she stood down her sister's insolence.

Yarrowkit's eyes trailed to the mess of herbs at Poppykit's paws, and her face fell. "Oh, really?" she asked sadly. Her expression then changed to a haughty one and she snickered. "I'm practicing. All leaves are my enemy right now. I guess yours just looked at me the wrong way." She raised one paw and extended the claws on it, then jabbed it into a dried leaf that landed near her own paws. "What are you gonna do about it?" she continued. "Tell Cloverstripe? Whispermoon? Oh I know, how about Echofrost? I'm sure she'd appreciate her time being wasted. I'd love to see how that conversation goes down." She stared into her sister's eyes. "Or maybe you can take revenge. I wouldn't mind target practice."

"Yes," Poppykit said, the slightest hint of a whine in her voice, before that faded as soon as she realised that Yarrowkit wasn't sorry at all. She attempted to ignore her sister's voice in favour of pulling her pile back together as she attempted to justify her actions, muttering a frustrated "Well Whispermoon and Cloverstripe wouldn't be happy with you," though not commenting on Echofrost's mention. As much as the deputy seemed nice, she had to admit that Yarrowkit was probably right in that she wouldn't appreciate being bothered by kit's play. She was reaching forward to try and grab the leaf from between Yarrowkit's claws when her sister suddenly stared her down, the hunger for a fight obvious in her eyes. "You just want me to make the first move so that Anisekit will agree with you this time!" she said through gritted teeth, though her paws itched to meet Yarrowkit's challenge. But she had her morals, and she would not start anything that she didn't want a part in in the first place.

Yarrowkit withdrew her paw out of Poppykit’s reach and snorted. “I don’t care what Anisekit thinks. Just so long as she doesn’t get in my way when I don’t need her to.” Her shy sister was easy to boss around and followed orders well. All Yarrowkit had to do was spin things a certain way and Anisekit was often trailing right behind, getting in trouble just as much. Even if it was devious, it allowed Yarrowkit to practice just how much control she had. “You making the first move would save me a lot of trouble, I must admit,” she said with a grin completely unsuitable for the moment. “But if you don’t, I win anyway.” Her strong-willed sister not fighting back meant she would have more free-reign to do what she wanted. “I have to say, Poppykit, you don’t want cats stepping on you. Do all you can to avoid that.” She tore the leaf in half, an action meant to punctuate her words.

Poppykit's irritation only grew when Yarrowkit took back the leaf she'd been about to rescue, but the only outward show of that was her twitching tailtip. She was determined not to rise to her sister's challenges, as hard as Yarrowkit was making that for her. Yarrowkit's grinning remark drew a pointed "Hmm" from Poppykit, but she didn't comment on or agree with the second comment. As far as she was concerned it wasn't about a winner and a loser; they weren't really fighting, and as long as neither of them made that first move they would stay at a stalemate forever. But Yarrowkit tearing the precious herb in two made Poppykit stalk forwards on stiff legs and place a firm paw on one half of the leaf, a fierce note in her voice as she said "Believe me, I will."

The shift in demeanor and tone was obvious, and Yarrowkit smiled. She looked her sister up and down before she said, “What’s wrong? You seem upset.” Her tone was flippant, and her own posture remained relaxed and unperturbed. She didn’t expect anything from Poppykit, really. Poppykit could posture all she wanted, but so far, she never backed that up with actual action. Until then, Yarrowkit didn’t see her as a threat. She covered a yawn with the tip of her tail. “But if you’re quite done, I’m sure Whispermoon would like those herbs cleaned up. It wouldn’t do well to make it look like she did that.”

Yarrowkit's smile was infuriating, and Poppykit wished that she knew what to do to make her sister take her seriously. But she knew that the only thing that could accomplish that was her fighting back, and that wasn't something she was willing to do. Yet, at any rate. "I wonder why that could be," she said, pulling the leaf from beneath Yarrowkit's paw in a single motion. She fixed her sister with a final glare before turning her back on her to put the torn leaf in the unusable pile, then sat back down in front of the scattered piles and began to push the saveable leaves back into one pile. "Well, are you quite done?" Poppykit turned the question round, refusing to look at her Yarrowkit as she worked. "Because there's no point in me getting these cleaned up if you're going to pull that stunt again. Like I said, I bet she wouldn't be happy with you." Chances are the threat would mean nothing to Yarrowkit but she had to try.

She remained unperturbed, even when her sister took the leaf back. “I’m Yarrowkit. And you’re Poppykit. Maybe they’d be annoyed that we created a mess, but they don’t take us seriously. You see how the apprentices and even older warriors can’t be bothered with us. Until we’re useful to them, we’re completely out of their sight.” Cloverstripe always droned on about that, that they should stay out of the way until they weren’t useless. “You can pretend that they genuinely care, but they’re far too busy in truth.” Yarrowkit straightened, watching the leaf pile Poppykit was forming in disinterest. “It was hardly fun the first time,” she said in reference to the herb pile, interrupted by a yawn, “so you don’t have to worry about me repeating that. I’m not that inconsiderate.”
