"...is the lust of the mind."
- Thomas Hobbes
At least new-leaf had arrived. She quite hated leaf-bare, her black fur sticking out like the sorest of thumbs against the pure white snow. Jorunn was interested to see how green-leaf would be in this territory, although she was never ready for that season either. Having black fur was a pain, but nighttime was the most comfortable for her. She could blend in with the shadows, so as a result, she tended to be the most active at night. Not that she was totally reclusive during the day, as she was this calm afternoon. Feeling most comfortable resting in the trees, she had found a sturdy branch to sprawl on. Her head rested on her left paw, her right front paw and right leg were hanging down from the branch. Jorunn had already met with her mother, but had managed to ultimately avoid meeting her half-siblings or Phoenix. She chose to observe from the side at the moment, although Jorunn was sure Svana already told them about her. The black she-cat had mixed feelings about seeing her mother now. Svana seemed much softer than what Jorunn grew up with. She was still strict with her training, but not nearly as harsh. On cue, the scar behind her left ear throbbed with phantom pain. If she were honest with herself, she was still a little bitter about it. Especially so since she saw that Svana did not treat her half-siblings the same way. Her tail flicked with annoyance as she shifted her head, as if physically trying to repress the thoughts in her head.

Einar let out a low huff of air as he managed to leave the den, having spent the better part of the morning trying to perfect a move and ending up getting cuffed over the head repeatedly for his sloppiness. His siblings had long since been released from training, at least for now, cause he had no idea if there was any other sessions planned for the later part of the day. Right on cue it seemed, his foot got snagged on a branch and sent him tumbling head over heels into a tree "fox-dung!" he spat out as he scrambled to his paws, his hind legs now aching from where they had slammed into the tree. He took a swipe at a branch in front of him only to yelp as the swipe caused it to come slamming up into his nose. Growling, he rubbed his nose with his paw and seemed to just settle down to sulk.

The noise caught her attention and she looked down, her copper eyes zeroing in on the young tom who seemed to be having quite a rough go of things. "Mmmh," she hummed to herself, feeling curious. From what she had observed, the young tom seemed to be the one in the litter named Einar, and apparently he didn't inherit the natural grace of Svana. Or, at least, it hadn't sprouted yet. Watching him now, he seemed to be upset...vulnerable. She figured it might be about time she start making appearances to the rest of her family, why not start with him?
"Looks like you're having trouble," she called down, her tail swinging lazily from side to side. While she didn't have as thick of an accent as Svana, it was still noticeable and she didn't doubt that Einar would recognize it immediately.

The sound of someone speaking, caused him to practically jump out of his fur right as he snapped his head up trying to see who had spoken. The result was his body starting to twist, following his head only to end up a head on the ground as his hind legs slipped and he went sprawling with his chin banging on the ground. Grumbling some more, he got back up and looked up once more, his head tilted as the accent in the voice registered, it was familiar. Much like mothers but not as thick or deep. He managed to spot the black she-cat and he blinked "uh, Yeah i guess" he responded cautiously. Svana had taught to be cautious about other cats but not overly so, you never know who could be a potential customer. "one of those days" he said with a small shrug of his shoulders, figuring no point in telling a stranger that this was more of a regular occurrence.
Though he couldn't help but feel like this cat was no stranger, was more familiar even though he had never met or seen her before.

Judging from the lack of recognition, Jorunn assumed that maybe Svana didn't share the knowledge of her presence with her small family. Svana probably assumed that Jorunn would have left the area soon enough, but she felt a little annoyed that she didn't tell her kits about their big sister. "Ah, yes," she agreed thoughtfully, although she herself didn't recall having a day like his in many moons. While Jorunn was a slacker in attitude, she was far from it in ability. But little Einar didn't need to know that. Leaning forward on her branch slightly, she grinned with interest. "You don't know who I am, do you, Einar?"

Einar had been studying the other she-cat, still getting the feeling that she was familiar in some way, but her use of his name had him snapping away from that puzzle and had his hackles rising slightly. "how-how do you know my name?" he demanded, though it sounded more like he was asking with how uncomfortable he was. The she-cats expression and general air had a familiar feeling but it wasn't something he wanted to linger on at the moment.

Oh, this was much more fun than she had anticipated. Jorunn appreciated his attempt at immediate defense, but it did little to intimidate her. Deciding to play silently, she stood from her branch and stretched with ease, making sure to take her time. She began to climb down the tree, the forest silent except for her claws against the bark, until she was close enough to the ground that she could jump. Jorunn landed, facing Einar so her copper gaze could see him fully. Most would think copper colored eyes to be warm, but in Jorunn, they were frigid and void, except for the brief flashes of sadistic glee or humor. "I've been around," she finally mewed, walking up to him to close the distance. Like Einar, she was slender with long legs, but she had filled out her frame with maturity, with a long tail ticking back and forth behind her. Her face, though, was sharp, calculation seemingly etched into her features. "Don't worry, I won't kill you. I imagine Mother would be quite disappointed if I did."

The silent approach had Einar's hackles raising even more, his limbs stiff as he watched her warily. His mind warring between staying still and bolting back home. Though the thought of facing his mother after running from a stranger in their area was a good deterrent to that plan. When the she-cat finally spoke, his ears twitched before focusing on one part of the sentence that seemed to click everything into place. "Mother?" His head tilted as he studied the black she-cat "I didn't think anyone ever came back once they left" He said a bit suspiciously. Though everything made sense, the accent and why he thought she was familiar in a way, he was still uneasy as no other older siblings had come back home since he'd been born.

Jorunn shrugged indifferently, glancing over Einar in the direction of the den. "Not often," she answered, before her gaze met Einar's again, "but I heard a very interesting little rumor. You see, the Svana that raised me was quite different from the Svana that's raising you. This Svana is much softer. I decided to come see for myself." As she finished speak, her head tilted slightly as she watched Einar.

Einar blinked at the words, "softer? How?" he asked hesitantly, wanting to know but also wondering how in the world his mother was softer now than to previous litters. He could swear that his head's probably gonna hurting for the next couple of days and probably more as he could see more cuffs and getting thrown to the ground coming in the future.

Her eyes scanned over Einer's pelt. She had never noticed any scars previously, but up close, could see that there were none. At least not from Svana's claws. Without immediately answering, she turned lowered and turned her head, to expose three jagged scars behind her ear. "Left by Svana," she explained and then finished with a slight sneer, "because I had an attitude."

Einar took a step back when she showed him the scars behind her ear, his tail practically spiked. His immediate reaction was to snap out a denial but when thinking about it, he could easily see Svana doing something like that, especially when annoyed. Though she had yet to raise claws to him or his siblings he had seen plenty of times where she seemed quite cross with him and looked about ready to attack him because he had been unable to get the grasp of a move or concept that she had been teaching them. Realizing he had been silent for a long time he thought of something to say "everyone changes I guess" he muttered

"Indeed," Jorunn replied, studying Einar. She could sense his defensiveness toward Svana and she wondered how empathetic the young tom might be. This kind of life wasn't for the empathetic and she had seen it ruin cats. Could this be a result of Svana's weakening? "You should consider yourself fortunate, Einar, that you get to be spared the more ruthless methods of training she used to enforce."

Einar shifted once more, uncomfortable in the direction of the conversation but unsure of how to steer it away. Jorunn was an unknown to him, only briefly mentioned by his mother a couple of times. "I guess so, though I doubt I'll ever really know" he said after a few moments, resisting the urge to back away once more. Though he couldn't help the curiosity blooming in his chest the longer the conversation went on. He hesitated before speaking once more "Have you traveled far?"

"Quite," she answered. "Especially to come here. But I never went to the homeland. I never felt the need to." Jorunn's gaze wandered around again, wondering if Svana would make an appearance. Her mother definitely wasn't very pleased to see her and she imagined that Svana would want to protect her newest offspring from Jorunn's influence.

Einar tilted his head slightly, his fear diminishing as his curiosity took its place. "have you met any interesting cats?" he asked, noting how Jorunn's gaze was wandering around and had a brief wonder of whether his mother would show up but figured it wasn't something to be overly worried about.

"Eh," she replied initially, shrugging her shoulders. "I suppose it depends on your definition of 'interesting', but yes, I've met some you could call interesting cats. Killed most of them, so I guess not that interesting."

Einar blinked at the bluntness regarding her killing. Though he figured that with their line of work that it was to be expected that a contract would require killing at some point. "should have led more interesting lives is for sure" he said with a small roll of his shoulders.

"You sympathize with them?" Jorunn questioned, surprised and curious by the young tom's response. Svana would be quite disappointed indeed if she discovered her young pupil was sympathizing with their victims.

Einar tilted his head in thought to the question "no not really, just mean that if they didn't wish to end up dead should have either led more interesting lives" he said with a shrug of his shoulders "their own fault they ended up dead"
