Dancingflame laid down in her nest, blinking her eyes slowly as she watched the sky outside the den lighten from a pitch dark to a morning grey. She had spent most of the previous night going over thoughts in her head, wondering how to explain to her daughter about her father. She had made arrangements with Reedshadow to take her daughter out today. She had resolved to tell Cherrypaw the truth about her heritage, about how her father is and how it was her, Dancingflame, that had broken the code. Once the light outside was more yellow than grey she heaved herself to her paws and slipped out of the den, stretching her legs out as she did so. Her jaws stretching in a yawn, her eyes blinking as she tried to forget that she spent most of the night awake.

Cherrypaw was informed that her next training session would be with Dancingflame instead of Reedshadow. While she liked routine, she didn’t mind breaking it for her mother. She was feeling stronger physically and mentally, and as much as it hurt to, she was starting to accept Mothkit’s loss. Maybe she was more pragmatic than she realized, or maybe she was trying to live a life fit enough for the both of them—in that case, could Mothkit really be gone?
She gave her mother space in the last moon to grieve. She also wanted a taste of independence, so she tried to mimic the other apprentices around her. They mostly stuck with their friends instead of their parents, so she did the same. But now, Cherrypaw was excited to show Dancingflame what she learned. The red tortie walked out of the apprentices’ den and to Dancingflame, who she saw nearby. “Hi Dancingflame!” she greeted warmly. “This is a nice surprise.”

Dancingflame purred as Cherrypaw approached "hello darling" she greeted, resisting the urge to brush a few licks across her daughters ears, unsure of how that would go over. "I wanted to spend sometime with you, I know I haven't done so in the past moon. Plus, figure I'd give Reedshadow a break from you" she mewed, a teasing tone entering her voice at the last part.

Cherrypaw nodded in understanding, but then her face fell into a mock scowl. “A break from me? I’m the definition of a perfect apprentice!” It was nice to share light-hearted banter with her mother after the terrible few moons they had. For a while she wasn’t sure they would be able to ever see the light in anything, but she was happy to see it was slowly changing. They were all they had, so Cherrypaw was relieved that Dancingflame was recuperating. “So what is your plan today? Reedshadow and I were working on water-based moves, but I’m good to try anything you had in mind.” She couldn’t even be sure they were going to train, but she was so focused on it that her mind made that assumption.

Dancingflame gave an amused purr at Cherrypaw's response to her teasing, glad that they had this time. She wasn't too sure if they would have the same resonance after she told her daughter the truth. Her ears pricked at her daughters question, "well then, we can continue with some water moves if you'd like. I'll show you the spot where I learned how to swim." she mewed with a small smile, wishing to push the inevitable conversation back for a few more moments.

"Okay!" She agreed eagerly. Cherrypaw followed closely behind Dancingflame, taking the time to look around and enjoy their territory. The sun peeked through willow branches, and a faint mist hovered over the large pools of water. Birds sang in the distance, and the air was comfortable, not too cold and not too warm. She felt herself relaxing under it all, and she almost didn't notice when they stopped walking. She blinked several times, coming back into focus, and found that they were standing at a small stream. It was two cat-lengths across and slow-flowing. "Was it here?" she asked. "Or is this where we're going to practice a move or two?"

Dancingflame gave a small purr of amusement "we'll practice a few moves here before moving on to the place where I learned to swim. Better to practice moves in shallow water" she mewed as she stepped into the stream, noting that it only came up to just under her belly, giving plenty of room to maneuver.

Cherrypaw followed Dancingflame into the stream. It just lapped at her flanks, but it was still enough that it was a little difficult to move through. She ambled her way so that she stood across from her mother, standing with locked legs so she could brace herself against the tug of the water. Her water moves were sorely lacking, but she needed more training on it, being a new apprentice. She tried to look confident, but she was sure she was failing. “What are we going to try? I might need to take it a little slow,” she admitted reluctantly. She wanted to be the best she could be, but she had to keep in mind that she wouldn’t get there overnight, as hard as it was to not think it.

Dancingflame made sure to keep an eye on her daughters stance, to ensure that if she ended up slipping, she would be able to catch her. "first I'm gonna teach you how we hide in the water in preparation for attacking an enemy" she mewed. She moved so she was beside her daughter "the key is to get as close to the bank as you possibly can while still remaining in the water, cats often forget to check the water for danger." she explained briefly. "watch" she mewed before she moved towards the bank, lowering herself as she did so until just her nose and eyes remained above the water, her ears flattened to her head to help hide them. Once she was positioned she froze, knowing that her silver tabby pelt helped her hide in the water better.

Cherrypaw watched closely, eyes widening when she saw the degree to which Dancingflame submerged herself. She could barely see her mother, and she wondered how her mother didn’t get swept away; and to a lesser point, she wondered how Dancingflame didn’t get water in her nose. Instead of questioning it though, she waded to a point ahead of her mother to try it herself. She carefully lowered herself until the water was streaming past her neck. Cherrypaw paused anxiously before moving even slower, but she couldn’t get herself much lower. “How do I know the water won’t rush over my face?” she asked worriedly.

Standing up, Dancingflame watched her daughter move, resisting the urge to move forward and lick her daughter across the ears. "at times you don't unfortunately, but in times like this, where the water is smooth it is uncommon for the water to rush over your face" she mewed gently. "For now, rather than going all the way down, go down until you just cover your muzzle if you wish. It takes practice to remain stable in that position. Don't go too far too fast" she mewed.

Cherrypaw did as instructed, taking her time to relax in the water. She managed to get almost as low as Dancingflame once she took her time, but trying to flatten her ears made her risk submerging them, and the sensation was uncomfortable. She rose back up and shook some of the water from her fur. “I don’t think I’m gonna do this any better today,” she said with a sigh. She shook out her fur, then looked to her mother. “What’s next? I’m happy to keep trying what you have planned.” Her smile was genuine, and they came easier now. It felt good to spend time with her only family, and her heart felt fuller for it.

Dancingflame smiled at her daughters try "that was very good, its like they say, it takes practice" she mewed with a smile. Her mind going through different techniques, "well, much of the other attacks are either distractions by splashing water in your opponents eyes moments before you attack" she mewed "you can either use your forepaws, which create a bigger splash and can cause your opponent to quickly backpedal to get away from the water" she explained, as she used one of her forepaws to swipe a shower of water towards the bank. "other clans hate water so its a big advantage for us to use it"

She smiled again and waved her tail at her mother in thanks. Watching the next lesson closely, she turned away from Dancingflame and swiped her paw across the water several times. She laughed when it arced high, and after coating the round shore pebbles thoroughly, she waded towards the bank and climbed out of the water. Cherrypaw shook her fur out several times before she looked over to Dancingflame. “I can’t imagine not being a WillowClan cat. How do the other clans even live? Water is too amazing to hate.” It was their loss, she supposed. At least it left more for her clan.

Climbing out of the water as well, Dancingflame managed to shake her fur to get rid of the water without drenching Cherrypaw once more. She hesitated a moment before speaking "Cherrypaw, I have something to tell you." she mewed softly, knowing that it was going to be a hard truth she was about to reveal. "I know that you've probably wondered who your father is, and I've always avoided the topic. I just didn't want you to deal with the truth at a young age, but I know I might have made a mistake keeping it from you for so long" Dancingflame paused a moment to brush her tail gently against her daughters flank. Wishing that she wouldn't have to alter her daughters viewpoint but knowing she had to. "Your father is not from Willowclan, he is Acorndrop of Ravenclan. I made the mistake of getting too close to him after his clan took shelter from the fire."

The change in tone and subject was so sudden that Cherrypaw thought she misheard, or that Dancingflame was talking to someone else. But a quick glance around showed no one, and the way her mother was staring at her made her uncomfortable. It was then the words started trickling in, and she made sense of them. She laughed, disbelieving. “What kind of joke are you pulling, Dancingflame? That can’t be possible. I’m fully WillowClan. I was born here.” She desperately wanted her mother to laugh with her, to admit she was making something up. There was no way Dancingflame could be right. Her father must not have stepped forward to claim her. The thought hurt, but she could deal with that. He was probably defending WillowClan and didn’t want any interruptions from that.

Dancingflame couldn't help the small flinch at the words, the disbelief they obviously expressed. "I'm sorry, I know how much the code means to you." she mewed softly before her voice firmed "but listen, no matter what I did, or what I broke, it is not on you or your responsiblity. It is my burden to bear. I love you with all my heart and I don't like hurting or keeping things from you." she mewed, her voice slightly wobbly at the end. She wondered for the first time in a while whether Acorndrop still thought of his kits, she figured he did but she hadn't met him at a gathering yet, as she hadn't been to one to ask.

Cherrypaw took a step back. “No. You’re lying.” Her voice trembled, and she barely heard the rest of what Dancingflame said. She was a result of the code being broken. She was a mistake. What did that mean for her place in the clan? How could she be a proper warrior now? The weight of the failure that she inherently existed as was too much to bear. She choked back a sob and took another step back. Her gaze held Dancingflame’s brokenly for only a moment before she whipped around and ran away. She blundered into undergrowth in her urgency to get away, blinded by her emotion and shattering sense of self. Everything she thought she knew now seemed dubious.

"Cherrypaw!" Dancingflame called as her daughter took off. She took a step forward as if to chase after her but knew that she could cause more damage than help if she did so now. Clenching her eyes shut briefly, she prayed to Starclan that she didn't ruin her relationship with her last kit, she couldn't afford to lose her, not now. She turned and headed for a small place on that served as her spot she went to when she needed to think or be alone.
