Shadowheart slipped out of his nest, careful not to disturb Amberhaze, not wishing to deal with the small amount of pity in her eyes. With Fennelbrook's death, he had hidden himself once more, too much loss at one time. She had Fenpaw to look after, and while he knew that he could never quite reach the same pain as Fenpaw it still hurt thinking of his mentor's death, of the fact that he no longer could go to her for advice. It was only the duty he had to Yarrowpaw that kept him from becoming completely isolated, he had a duty to her and would do that no matter what.
Shaking his head, he pushed aside the thoughts of death and ducked his head into the apprentices den "Yarrowpaw" He called out, careful to not be overly loud. He figured that others would hear but it would register as a different name before waking up.

Yarrowpaw still wasn’t used to waking up early. She knew to expect it, but there was expecting it and then there was actually dealing with it. She was far less prepared for the latter, and she didn’t mind admitting it. Or complaining about it. Training so far was boring, so why did she have to waste her time doing what didn’t interest her? Arguments of necessity didn’t reach her. She just wanted to go past the basics. Every cat knew how to jump and crouch, so why did they waste sunrise after sunrise on it? She stretched her front leg over her ears to block out Shadowheart’s voice. “Don’t wake me up unless it’s something interesting,” she dared to say, snuggling deeper in her nest. The way she saw it, she wasn’t afraid to speak what was probably on all clan cats’ minds at some point. Why others weren’t honest about it, she didn’t know.

Shadowheart nearly growled, instead he slipped inside the den and made his way to the she-cats nest until he stood next to her. He gave her a small push with his paw "get up now Yarrowpaw" he growled out, not really in the mood for Yarrowpaw's moodiness. He had been planning on starting the basics of battle training but wasn't so sure that he would go thru with it at this point.

Yarrowpaw didn’t move. She had the urge to swipe her paw to bat his away, but she was able to control it. She just wanted to sleep a little more. Why couldn’t he understand that? It wasn’t like he was Cloverstripe. He couldn’t dictate what she could and couldn’t do like she was some kit. She had a mind of her own. “Or what? Why can’t we just do it a little later?” she grumbled. There was no way waiting until the sun was up was going to change how the day went. She was confident she could predict every day until the next moon, they were all so uneventful. Of course she heard all of the stories in the nursery, about AspenClan being taken over by outsiders, and especially of all three clans living in AspenClan’s camp, but as far as she was concerned that’s all they were.

Shadowheart did give a short growl at her words before he turned away from her nest, his tail lashing slightly. "Fine, if you don't wish to train then you can spend the day cleaning out the elders den and the nursery. Don't forget to check the elders for ticks" he mewed over his shoulder.

Yarrowpaw stirred then. Cleaning the elders’ den? That was something she definitely wasn’t going to do. “Wait,” she said quickly, mustering up her most considerate tone, which easily sounded forced. “Training sounds great. I was just playing, of course.” She kept the scowl off of her face, but she couldn’t quite keep the anger from her eyes. Before Shadowheart could change his mind or forbid her, she jumped from her nest and squeezed past him, bounded for the camp entrance. She paused there to look back towards him. “What are we doing today?” she asked, as neutrally as she could manage.

Shadowheart nearly huffed out an annoyed breath at Yarrowpaw's forced considerate voice. He started after her, his gaze nearly cool as he studied the apprentice, wondering if he should just enforce his earlier words. Though he figured that doing so would just cause more strife, so he let it go but figured if it happened again he would enforce the punishment. "We're going hunting" he mewed, changing his plans to do battle training, not wishing to add violence to todays already tense atmosphere.

She also managed not to say anything as Shadowheart listed off hunting. It wasn’t the worst, but if they were practicing the same old hunting maneuvers she would scream. She wanted to learn something new. Her ability was rapidly advancing, and she wanted to capitalize on that. To keep from making a comment, Yarrowpaw pushed her way through the camp entrance and started walking out towards the territory. She figured Shadowheart would catch up or direct them where to go, so she continued on slowly, trying to keep the bored expression off of her face and the tenseness out of her posture. She was only half-successful, but then she didn’t care enough to really try.

Shadowheart slipped out of camp after Yarrowpaw and trotted down the path, catching up with Yarrowpaw after a few moments. He could see the unhappiness of hunting in the young apprentice and couldn't find any type of shift in his training plan, despite changing them last minute previously. "Once you start actually taking training serious then we can move on from hunting, until that point we won't be doing anything more" he mewed gruffly before turning sharply on the path, heading towards the river, hoping there would be prey in the area around the water.

“Whatever.” Her single word was followed by a shrug. She let Shadowheart pass her by, and as he veered sharply, Yarrowpaw lagged behind him. She could hear the sounds of water in the distance, but she couldn’t see the source yet. Her gaze angled up towards the trees, and on a tree in the distance she saw a fluffy tail wiggling. A squirrel was slowly making its way up the tree. Lagging further behind, she made her way towards the tree. She got as close as she could before darting forward, and she raced up the tree after the squirrel. Before it could disappear within the branches, Yarrowpaw’s claws snagged it, and she picked it up in her mouth behind its neck as it squirmed to get free.

Shadowheart wasn't sure what exactly he could do to try an enforce training, his tail tip flicking slightly in irritation. His mind focused as he heard Yarrowpaw move away and watched as she hunted the squirrel "nice catch, not everyone can catch one in the trees" He praised, noting how fast she had moved.

Yarrowpaw didn’t reply, not that she could. She simply inclined her head slightly as she looked at Shadowheart. The squirrel was still wriggling in her grasp, trying to claw at her, but it eventually tired and gave up. Its submission made her lips quirk up, and she opened her mouth to drop it. The moment it hit the ground, it sped off with energy it didn’t have before, and she watched it go. “I guess not everyone can catch them in trees,” she said mildly, turning her gaze back to her mentor. “That squirrel wasn’t a challenge though. I want to catch something challenging.” If Shadowheart was trying to get a point across by making them hunt instead of fight, the least he could do was attempt to make it interesting.

Shadowheart's eyes narrowed at Yarrowpaw, his tail tip flicking back and forth behind him. "We catch what we can Yarrowpaw, whether its challenging or not" he snapped, at the end of his patience with his apprentice. "Since you don't seem to care or get that concept then we'll leave hunting for another time as well, come we are going to collect some fresh moss for the elders den" he growled out.

Yarrowpaw’s gaze slanted to mere slits in anger. Why was Shadowheart so determined to limit her potential? The squirrel was pathetic. Did he not see how she caught it? She could easily catch another if he was that upset about it. She could probably even catch the same squirrel. It couldn’t have gotten far. But he was clearly set in his mindset to make training as boring as possible. Her smile was overly-genial in a mocking way as she stared thorns in the back of his head. She started at a slower pace. “So what do you think moss is going to teach me? Respect?” She snorted. “Punishing me with moss isn’t going to get that squirrel back, if you’re that mad I let it go.”

Shadowheart whirled around, about done with Yarrowpaw's attitude "no, what I'm hoping it'll teach you is that just because you want something to be either challenging or different doesn't mean that it'll end up that way. I'm done with your flippant attitude regarding training, and hunting, so from now on you'll be tasked with taking care of the elders and the queens, bringing them food, changing out their bedding, and checking them for ticks." he snarled at her before turning to head back to camp "no more training will be done until I say otherwise" he growled over his shoulder.

Yarrowpaw watched him silently, smoldering. She didn’t follow him as he turned in the direction of camp. It was clear that she would have to take her training into her own paws. She could practice alone and out of sight, or at night if she really needed to. Shadowheart wasn’t going to stop her from becoming the warrior she was meant to be. It was clear their ideas of warriorhood differed, but she knew she had to appease him on the outside... Until she got her warrior name, that was.
