Echofrost stood in front of the Frozenpool with slight trepidation, she wondered what it was she would meet, and who she would see. Taking a deep breath, she settled down and took a drink of the still water, her eyes closing as she slipped off, away from the world.
~
When she opened her eyes, she was in a beautiful clearing, with many cats surrounding her in a circle, staring at her. She started as a they all seemed to speak at once.
"Welcome, Echofrost. Are you ready to receive your nine lives?"
Taking a deep breath, Echofrost nodded "Yes, I am ready" she mewed, her chin raised in strength.
She nearly crumbled as Ashfang swept forward, his fur rippling with stars, his gaze soft and gentle as he gazed at her. "Ashfang" she breathed, emotion chocking her as she finally gazed at her kit once more. She bowed her head as he smiled at her before he leaned forward to touch his nose to her head.
"With this life I give you Endurance, use it well to endure for your clan to lead them through both good and bad"
The pain nearly send her crumbling to the ground but she held her ground, locking her legs in place before letting out gasping breaths as the pain receded. She watched with longing in her gaze as her son stepped back, away from her and back into the line of cats.

Marshflower watched from the crowd as Ashfang gave Echofrost her first life. The new leader had only been a young warrior when she had died, but she would be the first to agree that she made a worthy replacement for Tinybreath. Of course Marshflower was saddened to know her brother had decided to step down, but after everything she'd been forced to watch him endure she was glad that he was putting himself first at last. He'd forgotten to do that without her telling him he was a mousebrain every five minutes. The memory made her smile, just before it was her time to step forwards.
"Hello Echofrost," she said, grinning at the younger she-cat. "You've come far from the apprentice who used to come training with me. I'm proud of you, and I know you'll lead our Clan well." It wasn't really her place to ramble, but the opportunity to give a life was exciting enough that she couldn't help it. But she reigned herself in before she could go overboard, taking a few steps closer to Echofrost in preparation. "With this life I give you patience. Not everything in your life will happen at once, and sometimes we must wait for the things that we truly want as rushing will only lead you in circles. Use this life well to remember it will be worth the wait." She winked before pressing her nose to Echofrost's, feeling the life flow through her starlit form into the new leader.

Echofrost gave a smile to the older she-cat as she approached, she remembered the days she had gone to the older she-cat when she was an apprentice, seeking advice when Featherflight had been busy. She felt a warmth run thru her at Marshflower's support and belief.
The pain that ran thru her body was different than the last but no less intense. It gave an impression of the pain it felt waiting for something you wanted but knowing that there was no other way. She could only give a dip of her head after a few seconds "we all miss you" she mewed softly to the older she-cat.

She had already turned away as was custom when Echofrost called her back in a soft voice, but she couldn't help but pause and look back at her. "I should hope so," Marshflower said, but the teasing nature of her words was lost in her sorrowful voice and sad smile. She missed them more than she had the words to say; missed her apprentices, missed her family, missed her Clan. But she could do nothing about that now. Giving Echofrost a nod in goodbye, she continued her path onwards and only smiled at the cat passing to take her place.

The next cat acknowledged the smile happily, flicking her tail to Marshflower as she passed her sister. Her form was willowy, swift, and almost identical to before she had died. But there was heartbreak in her gaze as well, something that she refused to hide in the face of the AspenClan warrior. Things were not hidden in StarClan--it was the way they took on pain that showed their inner strength, and that was what she wished to pass on to Echofrost. Nimblestep didn't speak to her at first, merely giving her a small smile and dipping her head.. "I had not imagined that life would go beyond what I had thought as an apprentice. But even if the decisions I made were not made with a sound mind, they were made with a strong heart." Slowly, she took a small step forward. "With this life, I give you love; use it to see what your eyes cannot. When your heart is heavy, know that others will always be there, even when you feel alone." Leaning forward, she touched her nose to Echofrost's.

Echofrost gave a small smile as Nimblestep approached, she hadn't been all that close to the other she-cat, despite spending some time in the nursery, as brief as that time had been. She listened to the explanation and could only blink.
The pain that swept through her was blinding and it took her a few moments to be aware of where she was. She could say the only thing close to the power that she felt once the pain faded was the love she felt as a mother. She dipped her head to the she-cat, her gaze steady "I'll always follow you're advice Nimblestep" she mewed softly.

Nimblestep stepped away as quietly as she had approached, giving another small smile before turning around to rejoin the group. However, before she joined them, she stopped suddenly, turning her head back to Echofrost. "Tell Trenchflame that he should do the same." It was a teasing tone in which she spoke, but she hoped that both Echofrost and Trenchflame would see the truth in her words. With that, she disappeared into the crowd.

How much time passed since her time in StarClan? She didn’t know. It was hard to keep track, especially since she paid no attention and never tried to. It was easier to keep to herself with Petalkit and not worry about what was going on. Perhaps it was a little selfish, but part of her never truly accepted her death, and thus she didn’t want to acknowledge where she was. Pushed into a stream and never found again, essentially forgotten, wasn’t the way she wanted to go. She supposed most cats didn’t get a say in the matter on how they died, but it still seemed unfair. Still, her feelings managed to mend, and slowly but surely she involved herself among AspenClan’s ancestors. She was one of them now, so she didn’t really have a choice. She liked to tell herself that, but in reality she wanted the normalcy of the clan again. She would never look to anyone else ever again.
Swantail waited in the throng of AspenClan cats, knowing her part in Echofrost’s rite of passage. It was her first appearance since her disappearance, and she felt calm and at ease. Maybe it was the stars surrounding them, or maybe it was the comfort of finally being home. When Nimblestep moved back to the crowd, Swantail smiled at her and stepped forward towards Echofrost. “Greetings,” she said. “I am Swantail, an AspenClan warrior from many moons ago. I let myself be led astray by sweet words and an impossible ideal, and I paid the ultimate price for my mistake.” Her pause was long and mournful. When she continued, though, her voice didn’t waver. “I don’t want anyone to repeat my history. Echofrost, with this life, I give you clear judgment; know yourself and your intentions, and question anyone and everyone who threatens to change that. See every situation with a calm mind and sharp eyes.” She closed the gap and gently touched noses.

The next cat to step forward had Echofrost curious, she could swear she had never seen this cat before even though she had an Aspenclan scent. She nodded her head at the she-cats introduction, her ears flicking as she thought of her own mistakes regarding another cat, though she was glad that it hadn't ended with her joining Starclan. Her body trembled at the pain that swept through her this time, instead of a mind numbing pain it was more of a pain that woke up her up and made her see the world more clearly.

Frostkit had been waiting alongside his sister, his whole body tense with energy. As Swantail stepped back, he bounded forward in several quick hops, practically shaking with excitement. "Do you remember me?" he asked, stopping a short distance from Echofrost. "I'm Frostkit!" he said proudly, holding his head high. "I remember you!" Amberhaze had introduced them, giving him a strict lecture about respecting Echofrost as deputy of the Clan. "You told me I was a fighter when we met." Lost in the story, Frostkit seemed to suddenly jolt, as if he remembered they weren't having a nice chat. She was going to be leader of AspenClan, and it was his job to help her. "With this life, I give you a sense of adventure, so you may embrace even the greatest challenge without hesitation. May you remain as fearless and bold as a kit discovering the world for the first time." He stepped forward and touched his nose to hers. Once the life was given, he stepped back, turning from the she-cat and rubbing against his sister's legs as she stepped forward.

Echofrost could only give a smile of fondness as Frostkit came bounding forward, his energy made her happy but it was tinged with bitterness that he hadn't gotten to enjoy that energy in life. "I remember you little one" she rumbled with amusement at his story, she remembered that day, Amberhaze had brought her kits out of the nursery and Echofrost had just finished issue patrols. She had wandered over to say hi, deeply amused at the other she-cats orders to her kits regarding respect.
She dipped her head down so that the other kit could touch her nose with his, the pain that followed was like a jolt of energy, the kind that made it seem like she could run and play all day. She watched as Frostkit walked away, brushing up against a dark she-cat as she swept forward. Echofrost's throat nearly closed as she looked upon Brookcloud, a second of Amberhaze's kits.
~
Brookcloud purred as Frostkit rubbed against her leg, letting her tail brush down his back as she moved forward. She met Echofrost's gaze, her own a warm amber gaze soft as she stepped up to the older she-cat. "Hello Echofrost" she said with a small smile "With this life I give you wisdom, so that you can use it to know when to listen to others and when to move forward" she mewed softly, knowing that she hadn't used that herself. She leaned forward to touch her nose to Echofrost's, feeling the shock as the life was transferred. She stepped back and started back towards Frostkit, she paused a moment, looking back "let Amberhaze and Shadowheart know we are together, that we are okay" she mewed with a sad smile before continuing forward.
~
The pain of the next life swept thru Echofrost, causing her to shudder as she tried her best to remain standing, she still had three more lives to go. She focused on Brookcloud as the she-cat paused in her retreat to give a message. Echofrost dipped her head to the she-cat before she disappeared into the crowd, following her brother. She wasn't sure how much she could actually tell other cats but would do her best to convey the messages given.

There was a duty he upheld when he was alive--to treat every cat no different from another, but to heal them as though each and every one were his family. It was a difficult task, one that kept him from forming attachments stronger than friendship within his Clan. But here in StarClan, he could see the results of those actions, and it was enough to satisfy him--to tell him that he had done well.
Stepping out of the line of cats, Mumblefall looked younger than before. Perhaps not as young as Brookcloud, but the peak of his life came when he fully embraced his role as medicine cat and took Whispermoon as his apprentice. Sickness did not keep hold of him now, and as he walked with slow, calculated steps, it was clear to see that the medicine cat still held onto his experiences that gave him such a good life.
"Greetings, Echofrost," he said without a smile, although the slight turn of his lip was enough to say he was glad to see her. "I had suspected I would see you soon, but I'm not sure some of the others believed me." Some cats could see when a change of leadership was on the horizon, but what he saw was Raggedstar, growing older and tired in his role. Had he still been alive, he would have helped to make such decisions with him, but now, he was to do so with Echofrost. Leaning forward, he said, "With this life, I give you faith. Even when faced with insurmountable odds, trust that you will grow into the cat you were destined to be, and that StarClan will be walking beside you, always." With that, he touched his nose to hers.

Echofrost gave a purr of greeting as Mumblefall stepped forward, while she hadn't been close with Mumblefall she had still known him for all of her life until he joined Starclan. She saw it as bittersweet seeing him again. His words had her ears perking with interest, a small smile crawled across her face. "Have to say neither did I really" she mewed in response. She blinked as Mumblefall leaned forward, touching his nose to hers, nearly gasping at the pain that swept thru her. She took a deep breath as the pain passed, dipping her head to the tom "always and forever" she mewed.

Oakfang watched quietly as Mumblefall gave his life, before padding forwards to face Echofrost. He hadn't known the she-cat very well during his lifetime but he knew she would know him from his death, the starry scar still remaining from where his throat had been ripped out and his life ended. "Greetings," he said once he was within earshot, giving her a formal smile as he paused in front of her. "My name is Oakfang, I'm sure you remember me. Most likely by my death rather than my life. But that is why I give you this life for protection, Echofrost. Be ready to risk everything to defend your Clan from those who wish to do us harm, for I can tell you it is a worthy cause to die for." With that word he stepped forwards to touch his nose to hers, knowing that this life would be a painful one to receive as his had been an agonising one to lose.

Echofrost felt her breath nearly catch as Oakfang stepped forward, while she hadn't known the tom that well in life she had felt a deep seated anger at his death, how the outsiders had used it as a vicious message to the rest of the clan. She listened to his words and nodded, resisting the impulse to dig her claws into the ground. She gasped in pain as his nose touched hers, sending a wave of pain thru her that had her doing what she had resisted doing anyways, her claws tearing into the ground under her. it took a few moments before she managed to focus back on the surroundings, her sides heaving for breath. Her legs shook but she refused to collapse, not allowing the weakness to happen.

Featherflight could not express how proud of her former apprentice she was. She'd watched Echofrost from afar, alongside her only surviving kit, and now? To give her a life so that she could take assume the leadership of AspenClan? It was an unimaginable honor.
She worked her way through the starry cats around her to approach Echofrost, adoration shining in her eyes. "Echofrost," she murmured, love in every syllable. "With this life, I give you courage to make difficult decisions. Trust yourself, and do what is right, even when the path is long and difficult." She stepped forward and touched Echofrost's nose with her own, then stepped back as Echofrost received the life. Once the she-cat had recovered, she spoke.
"I hail you by your new name, Echostar. Your old life is no more. You have now received the nine lives of a leader, and StarClan grants you the guardianship of AspenClan. Defend it well; care for young and old; honor your ancestors and the traditions of the warrior code; live each life with pride and dignity."
The cry of "Echostar" rose in the clearing, and Featherflight lifted her head to call it as well, eyes shining.

Echofrost inhaled a sharp breath when Featherflight came forward, her mentor looked the same as she did in life. Echofrost wanted so bad to just bury her head in the she-cats fur, she had desperately missed her mentor in the last few months. When the final life swept thru her, she shook with the pain but also feeling determined to move forward and face what may come.
Echostar squared her shoulders, feeling pride wash thru her as her mentor spoke before the surrounding cats called out her new name.
