It had been raining most of the day, and it made his joints ache a bit, and even if he wasn't the oldest cat in the clan he still felt himself slowing down. The tragic events of his life weighed on him on days like this. As the rain lightened to just a drizzle he rose to his paws, leaving his nest and making his way toward's the apprentice's den. It wasn't completely conventional to train in the rain, but it wasn't the first time anyone had done it. Knowing how to track in the wet season was good. Nosing his face into the den he spotted Badgerpaw in his nest. "Badgerpaw, would you like to go on a mission with me?"

Badgerpaw was learning that not everything was as glamorous as others had made training out to be. Like now, apparently sheltering from the rain was a kit privilege that he could admit he missed. He raised his head and felt his nose twitch as he looked at his mentor "what mission?" he asked, curious about what the older tom was planning as he picked himself up out of his nest and started making his way thru the crowded den.

Backing away so that Badgerpaw could exit he twitched some water from his whiskers, amusement in his gaze. "I heard rumors that there is an absolutely massive rabbit near the outsider border. It only comes out in the rain and so far no one has been able to catch it. I bet two mice to Paledawn and Dartwing the other day that you and I could catch it."

Ears perked, Badgerpaw couldn't help the small amount of excitement at the words. "Why only the rain?" he wondered out loud as he emerged from the den, resisting the urge to try adn shake the water out of his fur, it wouldn't help him in the rain. His nose twitched though at Brackenstripes words "two mice? well guess we have to catch it now" he said with a grin.

A smile spread on Brackenstripe's face, eye slighting up with old mischief, "No one is sure why it only likes the rain, part of the mystery. Between me and you, I have no doubt that we can catch it." Turning toward's the camp entrance he beckoned with his tail before he started leading the way out. "I heard that some of the other warriors tried recently and Boulderleap got stuck in a bush. He came back with twigs in his pelt and leaves everywhere." He chuckled.

Badgerpaw trotted after the warrior, chuckling at the warriors words regarding Boulderleap "well, he'll have a shock when we show up with the rabbit" he chirped as they exited camp, his eyes gleaming with excitement of the hunt and challenge ahead.

Old memories of his own apprenticeship rising to the surface, it was refreshing after all he had been through to feel some of that old excitement again. "We'll have the whole clan wanting to know how we did it." He steered them further into the territory, eyes sweeping the planes for familiar landmarks. His story wasn't entirely false, a rather large rabbit had been seen in this area, one that had evaded many of the cats in the area. He hoped the rain would slow it down, hide their scent so they could get closer. Slowing to a halt he turned towards Badgerpaw, "We're close. From here we have to be sneaky. Keep low to the ground and eyes peeled for movement. If you see it before me, signal with your tail and then we will make a plan." Brackenstripe grinned before he slid into a hunter's crouch and began to slide forward through the heather.

Badgerpaw nodded and slid into his own crouch, moving off in a parallel direction with his mentor, so that he could see farther in a different direction. His nose twitched as he scented the air though he didn't bank on his nose picking up any scent, rather using his eyes and ears mostly as he searched through the rain.

The wetness of his pelt wasn't entirely comfortable, but his moon in WillowClan had introduced him to the curiosity that was using water to one's advantage. Something flashed ahead of him, and he blinked the water from his eyes, lifting his head slightly to eye the movement, a fluffy tail bouncing in the grasses ahed. He slowed to a halt, lifting his tail to wave at Badgerpaw.

Spotting movement, Badgerpaw turned his head and saw Brackenstripes tail waving at him. He slowly made his way towards his mentor, casting his senses out and spotting movement in the grasses ahead, indicating something was there. When he was close enough, Badgerpaw grinned "guess we found it" he murmured lowly, so that it wouldn't scare away the prey.

The pale tom nodded as soon as Badgerpaw was close enough, "I'm going to swing around and get ahead of it and chase it back into your paws. You ready?" Brackenstripe shifted his weight, ready to get started before they lost the rabbit.

With a final nod, Brackenstripe slipped away into the swaying grasses, pelt sticking to his body as he crept forward in an arc towards the rabbit. As he got lined up, the rabbit's head shot up and he cursed darting forward quickly to drive the large creature towards his apprentice. After a moment of frozen panic the rabbit spun and ran, straight towards Badgerpaw.

Badgerpaw felt tension in his muscles as he kept track of where Brackenstripe was, he nearly froze as the rabbit's head shot up before focusing once more as his mentor moved into action. Badgerpaw let his tail tip twitch once as he waited with baited breath as the rabbit came closer. He lunged forward out of the tall grass once the rabbit was within two tail-lengths, hissing with glee as he snagged the rabbit with both forepaws, his claws curling into the fur and jerked the rabbit down to the ground as as he darted his head forward to quickly snap its neck, not wishing for it to jerk free.

Brackenstripe could feel the familiar burn in his muscles from chasing a rabbit, and he let out a yowl of excitement when he saw Badgerpaw take the rabbit down. Slowing to a halt, sides heaving and pelt plastered to his body from the rain and the run, he grinned, "Good job! That was a great catch!"

Badgerpaw sat up with a grin on his face, his tail lashing behind him as he looked at Brackenstripe. He couldn't wait to show everyone at camp the rabbit, it was big, and would be a great catch to add to the fresh-kill, especially with it being leaf-bare. Badgerpaw shook out his fur once before they set about the task of hauling the rabbit back to camp.
