Echostar was still getting used to the fact that she was now leader, like she had told Raggeds-tooth when he told her his decision to step down, she had some thought that it wouldn't be her that would be the next leader. But it was real now, she had gone and returned from the frozenpool a couple of days ago, a slight difference in her perception from the gaining of her nine lives. She still held her core beliefs but she knew that she was slightly changed from the ceremony.
Her tail flicked back and forth as she lay in the leaders den, unused to the quiet and loneliness that was the den. She may not know who her parents were but she had spent all of her life in dens filled with other cats, from the nursery to the apprentices den and finally the warriors den. Letting out a loose sigh, she heaved herself to her paws and exited the den, her gaze going to the sky and realizing that it was nearly dawn, she could see the gray light starting to rise over the horizon.
She crouched down in a spot where she could easily watch the rising sun, Echostar wondered if her new position would mean the loneliness that seemed to encompass the den where she now slept.

Sleep had been getting easier, somehow his nest had made it to be beside Echofrost's, and the odd friendship they had helped soothe the worst of his nightmares. The sudden absence of the she-cat who had somehow managed to see him at his worst and didn't judge him for it, it cut through him more than he cared to admit. Jaggedpeak would never admit that he was sulking in his nest, ears pinned back and a glare shot at anyone who got too close. When Raggedstar had become Raggedtooth, and Echofrost had become Echostar he felt a strange bitterness and maybe grief. She had much better things to do than spend her time with the clan outcast.
Except when he exited the warrior's den, grumbling to himself about stupid cats and whatever else he could grumble about, he noticed the leader herself, alone and crouched by her new den. Drawing to a halt he eyed her, seeing subtle things that only those who knew Echostar enough would see. When had he become one of those cats? Pinning his ears back he dug his claws into the ground before huffing and making his way toward's the she-cat.
Anyone else would have thought his march and facial expression was about to start a fight, and cats swerved away from him and his destination out of irritation or fear of his legendary fits. Stopping in front of Echostar he raised an eyebrow, ears twitching back and forth, some odd smile marring his face. "Not sure what I expected when you came back with a new name, maybe some oh so powerful aura or whatever. But honestly you look like the same cat, just with more mousedung to deal with."

The sound of Jaggedpeak's voice had Echostar giving a small smile, her own eyebrow raised as she shifted her gaze to the tom. If anyone had told her that she would form a friendship with the ill-tempered tom she would have wondered what they had been thinking but she couldn't say that she regretted the odd little friendship they had going.
It also gave her great joy that despite the fact that she was now leader he still had the same attitude. "Guess we'll have to wait and see if that ever happens" she responded dryly as she pushed herself up into a sitting position, her tail curling around her paws. She could readily admit that she had been worried that her new position would alter the interactions between the two of them, she was glad to see to some degree that it hadn't changed.
Her head tilted as a she studied the tom, noting that he seemed tired and guessed that he had been in one of his tempers, explained why cats had hurried to get out of his way. She thought about what needed to be done for the day, knowing that for the moment everything was okay, border patrols had been set and hunting patrols had been formed and encouraged. "Care to go hunting? Sitting around here can get boring" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

The tom snorted at her dry reply, smile cutting across his face more as he eyed her, then shot a glare at a younger cat who was too curious for their own good. Returning his attention back to Echostar, he smirked, "What? Not enjoying all the gawking and admiration for being one of the grand leaders?" He heard a few cats nearby gasp at his words, and internally it amused him to no end that they couldn't see the teasing tone behind the biting words. Turning he gestured with his tail for her to lead the way. All the stares of his own clan-mates made his pelt prickle and his mood was sure to be soured further by the gawking and gossiping.

Echostar couldn't keep the amused smirk off her face if she tried, the reactions of the cats had her shaking her head as she stood up. Some cats took things way to seriously, she slipped past Jaggedpeak with a smooth stride, flicking his ear with her tail "seems neither can you" she taunted him with a grin, noting the uncomfortable prickle of his fur at all the stares from the clan.
Slipping out of camp, she felt her shoulders relax a fraction, away from the stares and expectations of her clan. She turned and started for the area near the outsider border, she knew there were already hunting patrols near both Willowclan and Ravenclan, as well as a smattering of lone hunters in the heart of the territory.

Once the unpleasant stares of the camp were left behind he relaxed, ears twitching after the flick Echostar had given them. A comfortable silence settled between them as they walked, his eyes flickering towards the she-cat, seeing the difference between when she had to put on a face as the leader and when she was just herself. “Must be weird sleeping in Raggedtooth’s den now. Your old nest is still empty. Seems everyone is too afraid to sleep next to me.”

Echostar resisted snorting at his words "it's... different. Quieter" she mewed, her shoulders shrugging "lonely at times" she couldn't explain why she exaggerated but didn't dwell on it. She flicked a gaze towards the tom at his own explanation, giving a small smile "you have trouble sleeping without me?" she asked teasingly "scare everyone else away"

Jaggedpeak snorted, “What with your snoring? Much quieter.” He teased, he couldn’t admit out loud that her not being next to him had brought back all his nightmares in force. He couldn’t put that weight on her now. She had bigger things ahead of her. “We both know I don’t have to do much to scare off everyone around me. All I gotta do is sneer and they all turn tail.” He let out a short laugh, flicking her side with his tail.

Shaking her head in amusement at his teasing, she could only snort at his words regarding their clanmates "you got that right, you've turned into quite the angry tom-cat" she said with a teasing laugh. Her ears flicked at his flick against her side, bringing her tail around to flick him back, hitting him just behind his shoulders.

A toothy smirk appeared on his face, "Keeps all the idiots away. Only the intelligent get to be graced by me, the great master of anger." He felt her flick her tail behind his shoulders, his eyes catching hers as amusement danced in his gaze. Paws following paths he had walked a thousand and one times, letting him move on instinct. "Not too many of them dare to try and match me word for word."

Echostar gave a short laugh, her head shaking with amusement "you don't give them much chance to anyways" she replied back, letting the easy banter wash over her, driving the issues away for the moment. "I'm glad that this hasn't changed, I feared it would for a little bit" she mewed, glancing at Jaggedpeak for a moment before focusing on the path ahead.

His own laugh answered hers, smile spreading at her words, their banter bouncing back and forth easily. A uncharacteristic hum rumbled from him at her next words, his gaze softening just so as he glanced toward her again. "No name change and extra lives is gonna change the fact that I live to annoy the fur off you. You give back to me just as much as I throw at you. It's something I appreciate about you, and nothing is gonna change that."

It eased something that he said it, her ears flicked slightly "well, can't let your ego become to big, someone's gotta knock you down a peg or two" she teased him, her lips quirking up into a grin. She forgot about hunting and raised an eyebrow at Jaggedpeak as she flicked him with her tail again, amusement in her gaze.

He chuckled, rolling his eyes, "Ain't got too many pegs to stand on as it is, but I'll take what I can get." Jaggedpeak bumped his shoulder to hers lightly, content with their walking and talking. It had been a while since he had been able to just talk with Echostar, her duties as deputy and then leader had kept her busy. "Guess who better to keep me in my place than the leader though." He winked.

Chuckling along with him, Echostar was content as well to just walk and talk "we'll have to wait and see if that actually works" she teased him, her gaze flicking around, landing on a butterfly that was just flying by. She resisted the urge to swipe out at it like a kit, instead she switched her gaze around, noting that they were probably nearing the outsider border.

He followed her gaze towards the butterfly, before he let himself refocus back on her, noting the looseness in her shoulders, the content air around her. It was better than the tension he had seen before, he preferred this side of her. "You're a strong cat, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to keep me in my place." Jaggedpeak replied, amusement in his gaze.

Echostar could only give a small grin at his words, the content atmosphere unwittingly brought forward thoughts that she wouldn't have this if Jaggedpeak knew the truth. She mentally shook the thoughts away, he wouldn't find out so there was no need to worry! But both her heart and mind knew she couldn't keep this up, whatever friendship that she had with Jaggedpeak she couldn't lie to him. Nearly grumbling with annoyance at her own feelings, she nearly sighed before brushing her tail against Jaggedpeak's side before stopping, her ears flicking on her head.
"Jaggedpeak, there's something I have to tell you" she mewed, keeping her voice even, though she couldn't bring herself to meet his gaze. "It's about my kits, I'm sure theres been others wondering about their father. The truth is..." she took a deep breath here "there father isn't in Aspenclan. He's Shrikestar of Willowclan" she managed to get out, though she forced herself to keep talking, to get everything out at once. "It was a mistake, taking him as a mate but I can't regret what came of it. My kits are mine, I won't ever regret them even if I regret what I did to get them" she said bitterly, mixed with both regret at breaking the code but also at trusting a tom who ended up betraying her.

The sudden change in the atmosphere when they stopped didn't go unnoticed, and his ears flicked back as he frowned. He didn't get a chance to ask what was wrong before her words spilled out and the heavy secret hung in the air between them. Shock coursed through him, and for a moment he couldn't speak, instead he watched her, seeing the nervous way she watched him. It was something that he knew any other cat would use against her, would hate her for. But he knew her, had seen her beyond her walls. She loved deeply, especially her kits. Whatever she had with Shrikestar must have been long dead, and maybe that explained the tension between the two leaders when she had first brought her kits to the gathering when they were just warriors themselves.
"Your kits are AspenClan. You love them deeply. This..." He paused, trying to find the words he needed, "This secret doesn't change my image of you. I've seen who you are Echostar, and you wouldn't let just anyone close. Shrikestar must have said something special to get that close, and I'm sorry that he made the mistake of screwing it up." Jaggedpeak was just assuming that the dusty tom had done something stupid, he had seen the venom behind saying Shrikestar's name. He took a deep breath, shaking his head slowly, "I won't tell anyone. For both the sake of your kits and you. I respect you and what you've been through. "
There was a moment where he paused, seeming to mull something over, something like fear crossing his gaze before he looked back at her again, meeting her gaze evenly. "When I was a kit, just after my mother died, my father, he abused me and my brother. I always got it worse, for being small, for being slower, not as smart, whatever he could pick on. I have a scar on my belly from where he slapped me once, he snuck me and my brother from camp to visit my mother's grave. I don't remember exactly what happened to make him angry, it never took much, but I nearly died. He brought be back to camp, said an owl had nearly taken me, told me to keep my mouth shut or he'd take me out of this world like I took my mother out of it. It's how I got a lot of my scars as a kit, just played it off that I was clumsy."
A breath shuddered out of him, it was something only he, his brother, and his father had ever known, and now he was sharing it with another car. One who hadn't judged him before, and he hoped that she wouldn't now. That she wouldn't see what his father had seen and turn her back on him. "It was worse when he left, I could hear his voice in my head all the time, anytime I messed up even slightly, anytime I tried to make friends. All I could hear was him telling me that I am worthless, that no one could love me. Not even my mother, that she died just to get away from me. It's better now-n-days, but on the days where I don't sleep enough it's bad, on the days where I'm afraid, I can't block him out." He thought back to when he had run from her, run and hid in a tree nearly falling out because of exhaustion and the voice that would never shut up.
"You told me your secret, and now you know mine."

Echostar had waited with baited breath in the silence that followed her words, she nearly bolted before Jaggedpeak spoke once more. She felt relief wash thru her at his words, glad that this wouldn't change what was between them, nor would it affect the clan. She resisted the urge to snort at his words regarding Shrikestar before her attention was caught by Jaggedpeak words about his family.
She felt her fur bristle slightly at what he was saying, feeling the urge to hunt down his father and kill him with her own claws. She hadn't seen the scar on his belly but she felt sad that he had ever experienced anything like that. She hesistated before moving forward and touching her nose to his shoulder. She understood now why he had run from her that day she had sought him out while angry.
"I can only say I'm sorry you ever went thru that, and that it still affects you today." she mewed softly, she hurt for the tom who had dealt with that pain and had refused to tell anyone else, carrying it himself for too long.

He twitched his ears, some part of him still uncomfortable with the words he had spoken aloud, but Echostar's soft voice and the obvious anger she held towards what had been done to him helped to soothe that. He shrugged, trying to not let that whispering voice get too loud. He knew what it would say, that he was weak and she only pitied him, that she saw the weakness in him. Jaggedpeak shook off the words as they tried to cling to his pelt and he gave a quick smirk, even if it didn't feel quite right on his face.
"More like it affects everyone around me." He joked, feeling more brave about the joke than he felt. He felt like his secret was safe though, a maybe equal exchange of pain and worry exchanged with their admittances.
