Otterspirit could say that he was honored and happy that he had been chosen to mentor one of his sister's kits. Shaking his fur as he exited the warriors den, he made his way towards the apprentices and stuck his head inside "Squeakpaw" he mewed, it had been nearly 2 moons since training had started but he still felt giddy at the fact he had an apprentice.

His soft snoring turned into a snort as his head shot ip at the sound of his voice being called, bleary eyes seeking out the source. Once he locked eyes with Otterspirit a wide grin split across his face and he stumbled to his paws, letting a chirp in greeting. "Good morning Otterspirit." Squeezing out of the den and past his uncle he stretched in the clearing, "What are we gonna do today?"

Otterspirit grinned back as Squeakpaw came out of the den, stretching his muscles. "We, are gonna do some training in the water, including battle if we have time" he mewed, he had taught Squeak how to hunt fish and some basic battle techniques on the ground but had yet to do indepth water training beyond the basic swimming. He wondered if Squeakpaw would take to the water like he himself did or if he would require more time and training.

Squeakpaw perked up, nodding quickly as he straightened up, "Like fighting in the water right? That sounds like it could be fun. I hope I never actually have to fight another cat though." The idea of having to hurt another cat made his chest hurt, a frown gracing his features before his brilliant smile lit up again. "I'm ready! Training is fun!"

Otterspirit nodded at Squeakpaw's question, his gaze softening slightly at the young toms words "I don't know nayone who does wish for that" he mewed with a smile "I hope I never have to be involved in a fight myself, but its better to be prepared" he said as he started for the camp entrance, beckoning with his tail for his nephew to follow.

The small tom nodded, bouncing after his uncle and mentor, "Otterspirit? What was my dad like when he was my age?" His curiosity about his father never ceased, having not really known him for too long before he had died. Squeakpaw had noticed the sadness in his mother, her crying when she thought they were asleep. It made him sad to see such a beautiful cat like his mother hurt so much.

Otterspirit's steps faltered for a moment at the question, his mind casting back thru his memories, he was slightly disappointed that he hadn't been all that close with Nettleshade. "By the time I knew him he was a new warrior, and he was deeply devoted to Mousefern. I grew up with him always there taking care of your mother, he was a loving, caring, and he was always there. I'm sorry that I never got that close with him" he answered, trying to drum up any memories for his nephew that he could specify.

He seemed to think, mulling over what Otterspirit said before he nodded, "I can tell that he loved my momma very much. I can tell when she does talk about him. Like he was he warmth of the sun on her pelt even in the dark of night." Squeakpaw padded on next to his mentor, "Sometimes at night, I sneak out of the den and look at the stars. They're so bright and I wonder if my brother and father are up there practicing hunting and fighting too."

Otterspirit smiled softly at the young tom "I'm sure they are, I'm sure Nettleshade is up there looking out for Quiverkit and both of them are looking out for you, Softpaw and Mousefern." he agreed as they came upon a pool of water, it was one of Otterspirits favorite places. Otterspirit looked at Squeakpaw with a small smile "I'm sure Nettleshade is also teaching Quiverkit how to swim" he said softly.

Squeakpaw nodded, casting his gaze upwards for a moment before he looked back towards the water, excitement filling is gaze. Training was always exciting for him, he got to spend time with his uncle and learn to be a warrior. "What are we gonna learn first?"

Otterspirit smiled "first, we are going to learn how to dive and swim underwater. Many times an opponent is gonna forget to look down into water, so if you are waiting there, they won't expect it" he mewed, noting that the water was high enough to provide the depth needed but wasn't too deep to cause possibility of being swept in a strong current.

Squeakpaw nodded, a grin on his face as he dipped his paws into the water, enjoying the contrast of the cool wet sand to the warm dry sand under his paws. "How do you do it without being bothered by the water in your eyes and nose?" He peered into the depths of the water, noting it wasn't overly deep, but he being so small would mean it wouldn't take much to cover him.

Otterspirit took a couple steps into the water "Theres not much to do with eyes but you get used to it, nose on the other hand, what you want to do right as you submerge is let loose a small amount of air thru your nostrils before stopping and it'll help keep any water from rushing in, granted as long as you don't face the current" he explained.

The small tom waded in further, the water soaking his belly fur quickly, "Okay. Facing the current can put water in your nose." He looked back towards Otterspirit, waiting to see how his mentor approached this.

Otterspirit smiled softly before he started crouching, going at a pace that was slow enough for Squeakpaw to see how he did it. He let his body adn tail be submerged first before flattening his ears against his head and taking a deep breath. His head dipped under water, a small trail of bubbles following as he let some air escape thru his nose before blinking his eyes slowly to get used to the water.

Squeakpaw watched quietly, curiosity in his gaze as he took note on how Otterspirit was moving and how he held his breath. After a moments pause he followed, dipping further into the water until it was just his head out. Flattening his ears he squeezed his eyes shut and ducked his head under the water, letting out a small bit of air before he carefully blinked his eyes open, squinting at the blurry shapes around him, paws shuffling in the silt and water.

Otterspirit had pushed himself up to watch Squeakpaw lower into the water, ready to intervene if the apprentice showed any signs of distress. He felt a flash of pride as his nephew carefully lowered himself under the water, copying his own moves. After a few moments, Otterspirit let his tail brush against Squeakpaw's side, indicating for the young tom to rise.

It was weird, the feeling of being underwater, letting some bubbles of air escape his nose before he felt Otterspirit beckon him back to the surface. When his head broke the surface he gulped in air, a few drops of water dripping into his nose, making him squeak out a sneeze. "Did I do good?" He asked, peering up at his mentor.

Otterspirit nodded "yes, you did, you did very well" he praised, glad to see that Squeakpaw seemed to have a good attribute to water, much like he did. "come, we've got some more moves to learn, you'll be an excellent fighter on and off water in no time" Otterspirit said with a grin, just as revved up about the training.
