At first, Coyotestorm had been uncertain on receiving an apprentice after the disappearance of Azurepaw. It wasn’t his fault, but he wondered if that would affect his perceived reliability. It wasn’t something he had to begin with, so when he was named Mistypaw’s mentor, his surprise was potent. It took no time at all for him to grow comfortable with the idea, and any self-doubt was erased.
Several moons already went by since they first began their training, and Coyotestorm was still trying to keep training unpredictable. Sometimes he would start on hunting practice and change it to fighting practice without warning. Other times he would teach something unusual, like how to hold on to a slippery moss-covered stone while dodging tossed acorns and pinecones.
The snow made it difficult to teach the best way to run, but there was still plenty they could do. He waited deep in the territory, up on the first branch of a pine tree. Mistypaw would have to find him before they did anything.

Unpredictable. That was the best word to describe his mentor, and honestly he loved it, how well Coyotestorm kept him on his toes, kept him thinking when all the other mentors were boring and predictable. They all droned on and on, teaching in boring and over easy ways that didn't challenge him at all. Coyotestorm on the other paw did things out of the ordinary.
Like today, he was trudging through the snow, his long fur clumping from the wetness of the white powder coating the territory. His ears were pricked, jaws parted, as he paused trying to track his mentor. He knew the tom had left camp, despite the fact they had training planned for today. So he had figured that maybe he'd follow the scent trail, he was good at pretty much everything, so tracking couldn't be that hard right?
His nose twitched at the cold air, the scent of Coyotestorm barely clinging to the cold and wet snow, but the path of paw prints and marks in the snow led him to believe he was on the right path as he headed toward the pine trees.

Of course, with the snow being as heavy as it was, it was rather difficult to cover his tracks. He only made a half-hearted attempt, and before long, he could see Mistypaw in the distance.
It wasn’t a surprise. Mistypaw caught on to training quickly, and he made it difficult for Coyotestorm to fully surprise him. It was like a constant game of cat-and-mouse, and his apprentice was more than willing to play.
Carefully, he rose from his perch and snaked up higher and higher. It was a challenge to keep the snow from falling off the branches, and he could only go so high before the branches would wiggle and dislodge the snow on them.
He crouched again, against the trunk, further out of sight. All he had to do was wait and see what Mistypaw did.
