Redpaw liked all of his denmates well enough. Barkpaw could be grumpy at times, Lizardpaw could get defensive, Adderpaw could get quiet, but all in all they were fun to train alongside. When Fenpaw had been promoted, and his mother had been made her mentor, Redpaw had been ecstatic. He had good memories of playing with Fenpaw as a kit. His mother had told him and Peatpaw to be kind to the she-cat, since Fenpaw didn't have any siblings, and Redpaw had risen to the challenge. He loved spending time with her, she was just so cheerful and fun to be around.
"Okay, so," he called, balling up old moss from the nursery alongside Fenpaw. "Out of everyone in the apprentice den right now, who do you think would make the best leader?"

"Me," Fenpaw said immediately, grinning at Redpaw. She laughed then, shaking her head and jumping in before Redpaw had time to rpely. "Just kidding. I reckon you'd be good at it though. You always think before you do things and that's what Fennelbrook said Raggedstar has to do." Her words were truthful and she spoke them carefully, hoping the older tom didn't think she was still messing with him. She couldn't imagine any of the toms she'd grown up with becoming a leader, but maybe that was because she had grown up with them and still saw them as the little kits she'd played with in moons past. Even though they had already been apprentices for two moons while she'd been stuck in the Nursery. "What about you?" she asked after a moment.

Redpaw balked at her statement, pausing in his motions of scooping up moss. He hadn't been swiping for compliments. "I was going to say Peatpaw," he confessed, suddenly very embarrassed. "But you'd be good, too! You can cheer anyone up, and you're there for everyone when we need you." He pushed a ball of bedding out of the nursery and left it at the entrance. "I think there's more moss in the medicine cat's den."

Fenpaw nodded, trying to stifle a smile at his embarrassed expression. Clearly Redpaw hadn't expected her to say him, but she still maintained her stance that he'd be good at it. There was another reason why in fact; he was humble, and leaders had to be that too. "Yeah, Peatpaw would be good," she nodded in agreement, thinking of Redpaw's sister who had become another friend since she moved into the apprentice's den. She smiled when he complimented her though, oddly touched that he'd taken her joking seriously. "Aww, thanks. And yeah there probably is," she said, nudging his shoulder with hers as she left her old moss beside his pile.

Redpaw grinned at her comment, glad he hadn't hurt her feelings. He stepped out of the nursery and headed towards the medicine cat's den, glancing back to see if she was falling. "Who's turn is it to take the moss out of camp?" he asked, slowing as they approached Whispermoon's den and the pile of moss just inside the entrance. "You're the youngest. Maybe you should," he teased.

"You're the oldest, maybe you should," Fenpaw shot back, matching his teasing with a beaming smile as they headed for Whispermoon's den. "Actually I don't know who's turn it is. Might be Barkpaw's. Think it is actually. He can do it when he's done training." There was no reason why she and Redpaw should do it; they'd cleared out the Nursery so someone else could deal with the moss. "Anyone in?" she called from the den entrance before she padded in without waiting long for a reply, starting off by taking a few sheets of moss from the top of the pile. At least there were only Cloverstripe and Squirrelfoot in the Nursery now that she and Fennelbrook had moved out so it wouldn't take too much longer.

"Yeah, I think you're right," Redpaw said, not wanting to disagree with the idea that neither one of them had to do it. He took a few sheets off the pile after she did, the taste and smell of the clean moss filling his mouth and nose. He turned to leave the den, rushing quickly to the nursery so they could talk again. He set the moss down and looked over at Fenpaw. "What are you doing after this?"

She was still dragging her moss along when he asked the question so just hummed through her mouthful, but as soon as she put it down she swiped her tongue over her lips before turning to reply. "Nothing actually. Amberhaze's taking me on the dusk patrol but I'm free til then. So if you've got any suggestions then I'm down," she said, grinning over at him before starting to sort through the moss that was scattered round her paws. All her 'brothers' were out training all day so she'd been expecting to find herself alone for the afternoon, so the thought of spending it with a friend instead was nice.

"I was wondering if you wanted to go out of camp?" he asked, nosing the moss into one of the nest scrapes and starting to paw it back together. "I know it's cold, but we could go and see if the ice on the lake is thick enough to walk on." He'd heard of other apprentices doing that, moons ago, and he was eager to see if it worked. Walking on water? What could be cooler than that?

"Uh, yes! Definitely!" Fenpaw grinned at Redpaw's suggestion, already beyond excited at the thought of doing something new. She'd been an apprentice for less than a moon so still felt like she'd hardly seen the territory; even though Amberhaze had taken her on plenty of patrols, it wasn't the same as seeing her home from an apprentice's point of view. She'd heart Redpaw and Peatpaw talking of the places they would go with their denmates for fun and couldn't wait to see one of them herself. "I don't mind the cold. I'm fluffier than you are anyway," she pointed out, looking away from Redpaw back to the nest she was trying to line. Now that she had a reason for finishing quickly she wasn't about to take her time.

Redpaw huffed at that, quickly pawing together the rest of the nest. "I'm plenty fluffy!" he said indignantly, in a somewhat joking manner. He bounced over to the nursery entrance. "Come on!" he chirped, looking back at her. "Hurry up! And don't tell my mom about this, okay?" She'd been so nervous about his and Peatpaw's safety ever since Brookcloud died, and he knew she thought the ice was too dangerous.

Fenpaw's teeth were gritted in concentration as she hastily shoved the rest of the moss into the bracken of her nest, not caring about how neat her work was anymore. Cloverstripe and her kits would just have to put up with it. "I'm coming alright!" she retorted playfully, giving it a last glance before following after Redpaw. "And course I won't, she won't be happy with me either. It's really nice she cares but it's like I've got two mums now," she added, thinking about her mentor and how much more worried she'd been lately. Of course Fenpaw knew why; she missed Brookcloud a lot and knew that Fennelbrook had been very upset too.

"Yeah, she's crazy like that," Redpaw replied, dashing over to the camp entrance. "Don't worry, she's always been that way, even before..." He let himself trail off, not wanting to talk about Brookcloud again. "Anyways, the ice is really cool, but cold! Mom says it makes your paw pads crack if you're on it too long, but I think she was just trying to scare me away." He bounded through the territory, coat flashing red through the black snow forest.

Unlike Redpaw, Fenpaw didn't think Amberhaze was crazy at all. Just a mother. "S'alright," she said a little awkwardly after he trailed off, wanting to comfort him about Brookcloud but not really knowing how to do it and sensing that he didn't want to talk about it. Maybe she didn't either if she was honest; they were having a nice afternoon together and she didn't want to spoil it by being sad. "Ooh I don't like cold feet, and wet fur too when we fall over!" she giggled as they took off again, Fenpaw easily keeping up with Redpaw with her long legs despite him being that bit older and bigger than her.

"Pssh, I'll show you how not to fall over!" Redpaw bragged, slowing as they reached the lake. The wind off the expanse of frozen water was fierce, and at first he flinched back, but quickly recovered. He stepped towards the ice, setting one tentative paw upon the sheet. As it didn't crack, he set another, then slowly crept out towards the thicker ice. He looked back at Fenpaw. "It's safe!" he called. "In leafbare it freezes like, a whole mouse-length thick!"

Part of her knew that he was just showing off from the bragging tone in his voice, but Fenpaw couldn't help feel flattered by his promise to show her how to keep safe. That fleeting notion was forgotten though when they reached the lake, and for a moment she felt just like she'd done on her first expedition out of camp when Amberhaze had shown her the forest. "Woah," she gasped, gaze lingering on the beautiful scenery for a moment before she was distracted by Redpaw stepping out onto the ice. Her heart thudded nervously as he took his first steps out, but fear was replaced by excitement as soon as he confirmed it was safe. "That's amazing!" she grinned as she ran out to join him, paws scrabbling as she slipped and skidded a little before just about finding her balance.

"Just step slowly, don't walk like on the ground," Redpaw called, pushing towards her. "See? Just push yourself around, don't pick up your paws. It's so much fun!" He didn't know why his mom didn't like him doing this. Did she hate fun? The wind was harsh but Redpaw could barely feel it as he pushed himself into a twirl. He'd done this with Brookcloud and Peatpaw, once. The ice had been thin and cracked beneath them. But it was thicker now, that was practically in leaffall, and he wasn't scared. He was nearly a warrior.

Fenpaw watched Redpaw move intently, trying to work out exactly what he was doing with his paws before she tried it and made herself look silly. Her claws were unsheathed in a well-intentioned attempt to stop herself from slipping quite so much, but she did find that trying to push her paws rather than step as usual did make it a lot easier. "I think I'm getting it!" she shouted, pausing to grin up at Redpaw just as he pushed himself into a spin. As much as she wanted to try she reckoned she was better off getting the hang of just moving before she tried anything like that, pushing off with her back feet to glide past him. "I'll race you to the other bank if you want!" she yelled behind him, figuring a headstart was fair since he had more experience than her.

That was RavenClan territory, technically, but Redpaw figured if they didn't touch the shore, they ought to be alright. "Hey! No fair!" he called, pushing forward to catch up with her. "You're smaller, so you can go faster, /and/ you get a headstart?" he teased as he caught up with one long slide. "Watch out for RavenClan. You're about the size of a rabbit. I bet they'd eat you right up!"

"You've got longer legs!" Fenpaw pointed out as he slid past her, her expression one of outrage at the ease that he was moving at. Pure competitiveness drove her to grit her teeth and push even further, trying to ignore his teasing in favour of concentrating on every placement of her paws. But her focus wavered at his comment and she scoffed, managing to yell "Would not!" before it turned into a squeak as her feet slipped out from under her and she ended up skidding along behind him on her belly. Alarm turned into laughter within a second as she careened towards him and hoped desperately that she didn't end up taking him out as well.
