Dawn loved training. Kressida and Deja showed her battle moves, and they'd finally started sparring with her (after moons of pleading). Dawn always lost, but she didn't mind. Every day she lasted longer. The forest was so big, and full of secrets. Animals to be found and hunted, trees to climbed, plants to be scented. At daybreak, she rose from her nest, scrambling out of the den she shared with her family and scenting the air. Her mother would be up soon, and then they could go hunting. She began to groom her fur in rapid strokes, listening to the birds singing in the trees as she waited.

Bella was dreaming once more, a memory of a day out hunting with Light flowing through her mind. She felt herself waking up and bemoaned the feeling, wishing to stay there for longer. She blinked open her eyes slightly and took a moment to recognize her surroundings before remembering that she was due to take Dawn hunting. She had been so proud of her daughter for the past moons, watching her take on her sisters and trying so hard to improve.
Shaking her head slightly, she stood up and stretched before slipping out of the den, easily spotting her daughter sitting grooming her fur. "Morning my darling Dawn" Bella purred in greeting.

"Morning, Mom," Dawn said, stepping up to touch her mother's nose affectionately. She finished her grooming routine with a few more rapid strokes before hopping to her paws. "Where are we going today?" She rushed forward without waiting for an answer, turning back and pausing. "Come on!"

Nearly shaking her head in amusement, Bella followed after her daughter "we're going to a small clearing not far from here, to practice the hunting crouch a few times before we'll head to my favorite hunting spot" she explained as she came up beside her daughter, brushing her tail down the smaller she-cats back.

"I already know it!" Dawn replied, practically bouncing up and down as she darted ahead. "I've been practicing since I was a kit. Mom, I want to go hunting!" She practically crashed through the underbrush, scenting the breeze.

Bella raised an eyebrow at her daughters words and debated the pros and cons. "Alright, but if you miss you'll do one practice crouch each time" she challenged with a small grin, wondering whether or not Dawn would take it. She had a feeling that her daughter had a hard head and would more than likely take the challenge head on.

"Alright!" Dawn chirped, slowing to scent the air to prove she could do it. She knew how to do it, so she wouldn't have any issues. She caught the smell of squirrel and lowered her body, spotting it up on a branch. She crept closer, lying in wait beneath a dry, frozen bush for it to come down. The squirrel simply sat on the branch, gnawing on a lone acorn. Dawn stared at it, making a low chittering sound. The squirrel looked down, then continued eating his nut. Finally, Dawn burst from the bush in frustration, scrambling towards the tree. The squirrel turned and jumped to another branch, rushing along with ease. Dawn let out a low huff, looking back at Bella. "One practice crouch," she huffed. "That wasn't fair."

Bella stood still through her daughters attempt at hunting a squirrel and moved forward after the whole episode was over. "patience is a key feature for hunting. Plus, for the first time hunting its usually better to try and hunt prey that is already on the ground. Once a squirrel is in a tree with food it won't come down" she mewed gently as she came up to her daughters side.

"I know, I know," she huffed, falling into a practice crouch and creeping forward. "I just thought he'd come down. And that I could catch him." She stepped through the snow quickly, leaping forward to land sloppily on a root. "There, did it. Come on, I bet I can find something else!" She loved walking into camp with a piece of prey in her jaws, seeing the looks on her family's faces. Helping those she cared about was the best feeling in the world.

Bella barely held in the sound of amusement "alright, come on, I'll show you my favorite hunting spot" she mewed as she beckoned her daughter to follow her, heading towards a small copse of trees near the stream, her nose twitching as she scented for any signs of prey. Silently cursing her black fur that stood out stark against the white snow.

"Okay!" Dawn chirped, following behind her and scenting the air as they approached the stream. She could hear the calls of birds as they fed in the early morning, and as she watched, one landed at the edge of stream to drink. Instantly, she fell into a crouch, creeping forward as rapidly as she could. Just as the bird rose to fly off, she launched, catching the bird with one paw. It was knocked down and it fell to the snow. Dawn rounded on it, scrambling and managing to deliver a killing bite. She turned to her mother with a bright expression, bird in mouth and feathers in the snow.

Freezing once more, Bella let loose a purr at her daughters catch "well done my darling Dawn" she praised as she came forward and gave her daughter a couple of licks across the head. "great catch and well done for catching it as it was taking off"

"They move so fast," Dawn huffed, leaning into the affection and staring grumpily down at her paws. "It's so little. It's barely enough for one cat." Her tail fell to swish behind her in an irritated manner. "I don't think I like this time of year, mama." She wanted to see the leaves, and the flowers, and most of all she wanted to be warm.

"Nobody likes this time of year" Bella mewed softly, her gaze kind as she watched her daughter, "but it is necessary so that the world can recuperate and new growth can emerge upon the arrival of the new-leaf" she explained, her mind going to the many different conversations she had with Light, the season of leaf-bare being among them.

"Huh, really?" Dawn asked. She'd never thought of it like that. "Is it like...all the trees are sleeping?" She looked up at the forest, wondering what it would feel like to be a tree, never moving. She supposed they needed rest, too. "I guess that makes sense." She looked down at the bird, knowing they'd need to catch more for today.

"Yes, thats a good way to think of leaf-bare" Bella agreed, "now, while we go hunting for more prey, we'll need to bury the bird until we come back to dig it up" she mewed as she look down at the bird as well "where do you think we'll remember to come back to?" she questioned, wondering what her daughter would say.

Dawn scratched at the snow until she reached the earth beneath, but her claws were nearly useless against the frozen ground. She looked back at her mother. "Just the snow, right?" she said, covering the bird with it. She looked around. "Uh...the stream, maybe?" she asked, looking over at it.

Bella waited as her daughter seemed to experiment "just the snow right, the cold of the snow will hold the bird and will help cover up its scent from other predators" she mewed "you don't want to hide it in the water, cause the scent will travel down stream and might attract other's looking for food" she explained to her daughters second question.

"Also it'd get all wet," Dawn huffed, not wanting to explain that she hadn't meant to put it in the stream, but in fact had intended to use it as a landmark. "Where else do you hunt, mom?" she asked, eager to keep practicing and prove herself.

Bella tried to think of another place that they could hunt that wasn't too far away, they didn't want to leave their catches too far away. "There's some rabbit burrows in a meadow not to far from here, theres a chance that they might be out looking for food" she mewed after a few moments, her gaze going down to her daughter.
