It was a good question, but not one Kadaj cared to think over too often. "My companion--" he rarely referred to her by the title of "mother," but he almost thought it would have been easier to call her such, just for simplicity, "--is growing confused in her age. We used to travel around occasionally, but the prey is good here. Once we stopped, I felt it was better to remain in one place for a while--at least for her sake." It was an easy enough explanation, but he quickly followed it up with, "There are some cats who don't understand loyalty or your code. Those are the cats I prefer to avoid."

Flareheart wanted to try and find someway to push deeper, she just couldn't get rid of the notion that she knew this tom. Letting out a small huff of annoyance she decided that being blunt would be the best way to go "where do I know you then? I know I've met you before even if I can't remember" she could feel her fur bristling with annoyance at her inability to the place the tom.

Kadaj tilted his head, moving back just enough so that the rain might hit his upper body. It would be a pain to groom later, but the rain had cleared somewhat, bringing with it a cool breeze that he enjoyed much more. He almost forgot the warrior standing beside him. It honestly seemed like the she-cat took much from her brother--something he could recall from his and Shrikewind's interaction not too long ago. Almost casually, he asked, "Your brother isn't your only family, is he?" The comment was vague enough to be taken how she liked. Technically, her parents could be included, even being deceased.

Flareheart stiffened at the wording, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the tom. Her parents were dead, as such even though she included them in family she didn't truly think of them right off the bat. Her only other thought was her other brother, Zephyrpaw, who had disappeared years ago. Her fur prickled slightly at the unnerving thought of what those words could mean "my only other family disappeared years ago, before I could try and make any type of amends for what happened. Guess its true that you only know what you have when its gone" she mewed gruffly. She knew she hadn't been nice but she didn't think that she had been as cruel as to chase her brother away.

"Oh, I'm sure," he said, the last comment making it difficult to hide his sarcasm. Straightening up, he thought a moment. "Funny," he said, so nonchalantly that any cat could see the effort it took him to sound as such, "that a cat could disappear so easily. Don't you think? You Clan cats are so attached to each other, it's a wonder how you were unable to find your missing family." Kadaj paused, and then added, "Unless, that is, you found it pointless to search at all."

Flareheart felt her fur bristle at the words, her eyes flashing with ire "hard to find someone who doesn't want to be found" she growled, her mind shifting thru thoughts and memories before focusing once more on the tom in front of her. "Guess you decided enough time had passed" she mewed, taking a leap. There was too much coincidence going on, she was trusting her instinct that she knew the tom, knew him from long ago.

Kadaj had to wonder if the she-cat would take the jump, and was actually pleasantly surprised when she did. Apparently she was more forward than her brother, who was probably still in denial of who he was. Coincidences didn't happen, at least not in his mind. There was a reason for everything that happened, and to deny it would have been foolish. Staring straight through her, he replied, "Guess I did."

Hearing it confirmed had slight satisfaction sparking before it faded away just as quickly as it blossomed. Flareheart studied the tom again, her mind bringing forward his early words regarding a companion he had, wondering if he had managed to find some happiness after he left the clan. "never actually thought I'd see you again, figured that if you were still alive you would stay as far from us as possible." she mewed, her voice bland, there was a million questions but she couldn't settle on any one to ask, slightly hesitant to even ask as she was afraid of the answers.

Kadaj huffed to himself, but it was so quiet that it was unlikely she had heard. "Count those moons again, because that was what I did for many of them." It was perhaps harsh, but he didn't care to spare her feelings. He barely knew her to begin with. "I had someone to help me--and now I help them. There was never a real reason to come so near."

Flareheart wondered if she should feel more hurt at his words than seh actually was, her nose twitched as she wondered what happened to come to this point. "Don't have to" she muttered blandly, her ears flicking at his next words, eyes blinking with curiousity that she held back. "Guess you found some peace then, if not then you found your own family" she mewed with a shrug. She wasn't sure where her calm came from, maybe from the fact that she no longer was on edge with the feeling of knowing the tom, and finding out who he was didn't seem to matter all that much, not when the moons stretched out behind them like an endless river.

"In a way," Kadaj responded slowly, unsure of how much to actually share. Silver was the closest thing to family, but he always hesitated when using the word. It felt... wrong in a way. "Family" hadn't been so kind to him when he started off his life, so to put Silver in the same category was almost... insulting to him. "You must go out of your way to find friends out here, and it is not something I make a habit of, so take of that what you will." It had brought them closer to the WillowClan border, for one, which he hadn't yet decided whether it was a good or a bad thing.

Flareheart shifted her paws slightly at the words, she knew she wouldn't understand living outside the clan so nothing she could say on the subject would help. Her ears flicked slightly before she realized teh rain was slowing down. "I... I gotta go." she mewed taking a step backwards, still unsure of what to say, feeling unsteady in the first time in moons. "You have a good life..." she faltered at teh name, not knowing whether he went by a new name or his old name, instead she just gave a small flick of her tail and practically bolted away.
