Haypaw chuckled quietly. He supposed the answer was nuanced enough. “Very well. We’ll see if we can find one.” He was a little relieved that, for the most part, they would be staying on dry land. He knew that water voles could swim, hence their name, but maybe they’d get lucky enough to catch one before that. The ground quickly dried up as they walked, and he could hear the soothing trickle of streams in the distance. He kept his mouth partially parted to track any scents, but nothing immediately came to his attention. He padded up to the banks and peered over the edge, watching the water flow past. He then turned to look at Chirppaw. “Would you like to try looking first?”

Her unsteadiness on her paws seemed to be more attributed to the terrain rather than the sickness at this point, with her main focus put on making sure she didn't slip into any mud holes. It wasn't a fun experience, but the cool breeze felt better than a stuffy den, although she still did shiver from time to time. Pulling up and following his gaze, she watched the water as well, finding that its tranquility didn't really do much to settle the nerves that had settled within her stomach. "Why not you?" she asked, and it almost sounded like a dare, but from the twitching of her tail, it was clear that she was simply nervous.

He blinked in surprise. “I can. I wasn’t sure if you wanted to.” With that, he looked out to the stream again. Water vole, water vole... There was nothing in sight, and nothing on the air. He moved along the bank, traveling upwind, determined to find one. He caught scents of mice and birds, but he ignored them. Eventually he lucked upon a scent that seemed very much like water vole. Haypaw looked at Chirppaw with an excited expression, before it fell to an expression of concentration. He followed the scent as it meandered further up the bank, and he saw it among numerous leafy plants right at the water’s edge. Drawing closer to it with a quiet approach, he dashed towards it with a burst of sudden speed. Just as his claws were about to sink into it, his leg caught on a hidden root, and he disappeared as he fell into the thick growth of ferns and sedges.

Chirppaw honestly did not mind that they had not found anything yet, as just breathing in the semi-fresh air made her feel happier than she had in a while. It was very soothing, and made her feel more like her old self more than anything. The sudden scent she caught on the air was sudden, and by the look that Haypaw gave her, he had noticed it as well. She almost moved forward herself, but then remembered that she had purposely asked Haypaw to go ahead and lead their hunting trip. She awkwardly pulled back just before Haypaw broke away to dive for the water vole. Not a second after it seemed, however, that his paw snagged on something she couldn't see and he fell forward, almost completely out of sight.
Her illness almost forgotten, she stumbled forward, looking for his head. It didn't take long to find him. "Haypaw! Are you okay?"

Haypaw was momentarily dazed. He lay there as he got his bearings, but when he sat up he started laughing. “Oh, wow... I guess I got ahead of myself there.” He glanced sheepishly at Chirppaw, but she seemed more concerned than anything. She didn’t poke fun like Beanpaw would have. He pulled himself out of the plants and turned woefully to where the water vole had once been. “I messed that one up.” His tone was apologetic. “Should we keep looking? Or do you think that was a sign that we shouldn’t be hunting right now?” He wasn’t sure what else they would do, though. He didn’t want to push Chirppaw’s luck if she still wasn’t feeling well, but there was little else that required no energy.

Chirppaw looked around, her eyes taking in everything possible. There was a lot to see, and it was making her feel better than she had in days. "Let's keep looking," she said happily. She wondered if Haypaw might be purposely trying to come up with an excuse to go home, but she wasn't going to let him give up so easily. Her movements might still be slow, and the pounding in her head still present, but she needed to keep going, for both of their sakes.
