Raggedstar smiled softly at Redflame's apparent panic at his death, but for him, Death was hardly a stranger. He had already had the experience of losing eight lives. "This is why StarClan granted me nine lives," he replied softly to both Redflame and Amberhaze. "I wouldn't be worthy of AspenClan if I let you lose your life in an attempt to save my own." And now he was left to one life. He was truly mortal. The next time his heart stopped beating, it would be forever. Echofrost approached them as this realization dawned on him, and he looked at her thoughtfully, nodding his head in response to her words.

Echofrost could only sigh in relief when Redflame was settled in the medicine den under Whispermoon's care. Shaking her fur slightly, she felt a slight ache in her muscles from the rushed run through the trees and then the fight with the fox. Turning she made her way towards Raggedstar's den, wishing to do a quick check in with the leader, knowing it was an eventful day and also remembering that he had asked to speak with her once everything was settled down.

Raggedstar's appointment with Whispermoon was a quick one. Recovering from a lost life took care of the healing part with any wounds. There wasn't much more that could be done for him at that point, so Whispermoon gave him some herbs for strength. Much of the walk to camp had been quiet and while he stayed attentive to his clanmates, his mind was far, far away. Once they got back, he made sure everyone was okay and retired to his den. Part of him was exhausted, but the other part of him was very much awake. He sat in silence, mulling over the thought that had taken root in his mind when he heard Echofrost approach his den. "Come in," he mewed immediately, his voice breaking the silence that seemed so dense to him.

Echofrost's nose twitched as Raggedstar called her in before she announced her arrival. She slipped into the den, giving a small smile to her leader "Redflame's settled in the medicine den, Whispermoon says he'll be fine, though he'll be on bed rest for the future." she mewed as she sat down, her tail curling around her paws. Wondering what else that Raggedstar might wish to talk to her about.

Raggedstar chuckled and nodded his head, knowing it would probably be quite difficult for the young tom to stay put for so long. It seemed like it was ages ago that he was that young himself. Many, many moons had passed. Lifetimes, even. He broke himself from his thoughts and looked over to Echofrost. "The life that I lost out there to the fox," he started. "It was my eighth life. I'm fully mortal, now."

Echofrost nearly started at the knowledge that Raggedstar was on his last life "I didn't know that, I'm sure it'll be a while longer before you are called away to Starclan." she mewed, wondering what direction this conversation was going.

"Well, I would certainly hope," he chuckled again, but his chuckle died down into a solemn silence as he looked into Echofrost's eyes and held her gaze. "As for my leadership, I feel that it has come full circle. AspenClan is in a good place now. We've finally reclaimed stability, so I feel like now is the best time. Losing my eighth life was my sign. I am retiring, and transferring the leadership of AspenClan to you, Echofrost, as my deputy."

Echofrost stiffened in shock, her eyes going slightly wide at his words "Are-I mean, I don't..." she didn't know what to say or even how to say anything if she even had an inkling of the a sentence. "Are you certain Raggedstar? We've only make it to a good place because of you" she mewed softly, her mind reeling with the implications of the decision.

Raggedstar nodded his head slowly in response. "I have been thinking about this for a while," he admitted. "While it's normal, there's a certain sense of chaos losing a leader to death, I think. This way we can have an easy transition, use the current stability to our advantage. I will be retired, but always available if you need guidance. My presence will still be with the Clan." He paused thoughtfully, nodding his head again as if he were agreeing with himself, before holding Echofrost's gaze again. "Is there a reason you can think of that we shouldn't do this?"

Echofrost let her mind turn over her thoughts and reasons for why they shouldn't do what Raggedstar was proposing. She knew that her previous fault, taking a mate from another clan, could be considered a reason but she was loyal to Aspenclan through and through, she wouldn't hesitate going into battle with Willowclan. "No, I can't think of any reason. It makes sense, though I guess I never expected for this to happen. Being made deputy was a shock and I guess I figured that there would be a new deputy before you passed on the title" she said with a self-conscious look. While she had been vaguely aware that deputies took over for the leader, she hadn't really expected for it to happen while she was deputy, just couldn't believe that Starclan would give her the opportunity.

Raggedstar laughed at the comment. "Look at me," he joked. "You think I could really last that long? Long enough to outlive you? No, I doubt that I would be that fortunate. I already feel older than I am, and I'm pretty old."

Echofrost could only give a smile of amusement at Raggedstar's words "never thought of your age really, you just had always been there." she mewed with a small shrug. She could feel some anticipation settle in her belly, mixed with fear of what was to come. She vowed that she would do her best to lead the clan, try ane follow in Raggedstar's footsteps.
