Echopaw shifted her paws slightly, her ears flicking as she wondered how training was going to go. She'd watched as the other kits had been made apprentices, celebrating with their parents and siblings. The feeling of loneliness had felt like a kick in the gut at those times because she knew that when she became an apprentice she would have no one to be there, giving purrs of congratulations or licks across the ears.
Shaking her head, she pushed the thoughts away and heaved herself out of her nest, knowing she wouldn't be able get anymore sleep for the rest of the morning. She sat in front of the apprentices den, watching as the sky turned from a dark gray color to a morning orange-blue, the stars slowly disappearing with the appearance of the morning sun.

Featherflight was eager to take on an apprentice. Truthfully, she'd been keeping her eye on Echopaw ever since she was a kit. Featherflight saw herself in the young cat. She too had grown up with no one. Her parents had died in battle when she was a kit, and her only sibling had been taken by greencough. She knew loneliness like her paws knew the earth, and it made her sad to see it all happening again. No one should grow up without family.
"Echopaw!" she called, pacing over to the apprentice. "Congratulations, darling! Come along, I want to take you out into the territory!"

It took a moment for Echopaw to register that someone called her name, having been so used to being called Echokit, she saw Featherflight and gave a small smile at her mentor. She stood up, giving her fur a quick shake to settle the stray hairs. "how big is the territory?" she asked as she trotted up to her mentor, curious about the territory she was now going to see.

"Oh, it's quite grand," Featherflight said, turning to the camp entrance. "A whole forest, bordered by a lake." She stepped out of camp, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. "Do you hear that, Echopaw?" she asked, looking down at the she-cat. "Aspens in the breeze. I can't imagine a prettier sound. Reminds me I'm home."

Echopaw hurried after her mentor, ears perked as she to listen to what her mentor was. She could hear the wind rushing thru the trees and felt a small tingle in her paws as she realized that she was out of camp, her nose twitching. "does every territory have aspens?" she asked, curious. She had heard different things regarding the other clans, but was unsure of how much she had heard was actually true.

“Oh, no,” Featherflight said, looking down at Echopaw with a bright expression. “This is what makes us unique, gives us our name. We alone live in the aspen forest.” She stepped forward, slowly into the trees. “In leaffall, they’re all yellow. I think that’s my favorite season, all the colors. Orange, red, and yellow. The world turns to fire.”

Echopaw listened to the description, looking up at the trees with speculation, she just couldn't imagine what her mentor was describing! "Guess I'll see it soon" she mewed with a small hum, she had been too young to remember if she had seen leaf-fall so was intent on remembering the one coming up. "what does the other territories look like?" she asked, intent on getting as much information as she could.

"That's something you have to look forward to," Featherflight said, picking up her pace as she bounded out into the trees. "RavenClan has wide moors, and WillowClan has marshes." The other territories were alright, she supposed, but none compared to hers. "They suit them well enough. Perhaps you'll visit one day." She slowed as the lake glinted through the trees. "In leafbare, the lake freezes over. Be careful not to step on the ice. Even if it looks solid, it can collapse beneath you."

Echopaw made a mental note to never step onto an ice covered body of water "why do the others live in those places? wouldn't moors be too open? and who could withstand the water in the marshes?" she asked, her questions tumbling out, her mind going through the different aspects adn not seeing how anyone could live in such places.

Featherflight stepped up to the lake, breathing in deep as a gust of wind blew across the waves. "Oh, it suits them, I suppose," she replied somewhat callously. She'd never given the matter much thought. Whatever nonsense the other Clans got up to didn't affect her in the slightest, unless they were creeping about AspenClan's borders. "They're a different sort of cats. You'll meet them soon, when you attend your first gathering." She paced across the beach, moving lightly with careful steps and great bounds.

Dipping a paw into the water, Echopaw watched as the water rippled away from the spot her paw touched before shaking her paw to get rid of the water. "Guess I'll find out" she agreed, still unsure how anyone could withstand to have constant wet paws.

Featherflight noticed Echopaw shaking off the water, and let out a low rumble of amusement. "Don't worry. We're lucky enough to live in this beautiful forest." She nodded over towards the trees. "You musn't concern yourself with them. Come along, I'll show you the way to the training clearing." She turned into the forest from the lake, padding along until she reached the great oak. "We'll practice climbing here," she told Echopaw. "And the clearing is just ahead."

Echopaw trotted after Featherflight, her ears perked as she listened to what the warrior was saying. She looked up at the great oak tree, her eyes slightly wide "is it hard to climb?" she asked, curious yet nervous about that aspect of training.

"Oh, you'll catch on quickly," Featherflight assured, stepping into the clearing. "I promise, I'll keep a close eye on you. Wouldn't want you falling, would we?" She let out a low chuff, but quickly brushed the apprentice's shoulder with her own. "Don't worry. You're doing fine. I'm excited to train you."

Featherflight's assurances had the worry that had started building up settle down, it was still there but no longer a constant pressure. A smile blossomed on Echopaw's face at her mentor's words regarding training her, her tail flicking once "I'm glad that I got you as a mentor" she mewed with a small purr, feeling relaxed in a way she hadn't ever felt before, like she belonged.
