but this does not define you.
Amberhaze was so proud of Fenpaw. The she-cat was talented, respectful, and enthusiastic. She couldn’t have asked for a better apprentice. Fenpaw was so close to gaining her warrior name, and Amberhaze had been pushing her hard to prepare her. At least, until her mother died.
Now, Amberhaze wasn’t sure how to help her apprentice. What would be better; rest, or a distraction? Based off her experience, she knew the answer was a mixture of both. She’d given the she-cat plenty of time off, and now it was time to get her out of her nest.
“Fenpaw?” Amberhaze called, stepping into the near empty apprentice den. “I was wondering if you’d go hunting with me.” She hoped Fenpaw would see her words as an invitation rather than an order. Pushing her would do no one any good.

Fenpaw had thought she had everything. She had parents who loved her, she had 'brothers' who she loved, and she had a mentor who she got on with so well. And she'd been naive enough to think that none of that would ever change. But then the unthinkable had happened; Fennelbrook had died, and now Fenpaw felt so lost. She still had her father though he was much more withdrawn, making Fenpaw wonder bitterly if she'd just turned into one of his other kits who he never spent time with . She still had her brothers. But they didn't know how to act around her now, leaving her to feel as though she'd just lost everything.
Amberhaze's voice calling her name made Fenpaw remember that she still had her mentor though. She raised her head slowly, her joints feeling stiff from where she'd hardly moved unless she'd had to in the last few days since Fennelbrook's burial. Her words seemed like a request like an order, and as much as she wanted to curl back up and just sleep her life away she could recognise that it was nice Amberhaze had thought to ask her rather than just leave her be until her assessment.
"Ok," she said in a voice raspy with lack of use, and with effort she uncurled her limbs to stand vulnerably in the middle of the empty den.

Ambehaze’s heart tugged as she gazed at Fenpaw. “I’m glad,” she said warmly, turning towards the camp entrance and walking slowly so the she-cat could follow at a gentle pace. “The forest always clears my head.” As they stepped through the trees, leaves just beginning to crisp and fall, Amberhaze let out a low sigh. She didn’t know if this would help, or hurt, but she had to try.
“I lost my mother too, you know,” she murmured, glancing back at Fenpaw. She let out a low rumble of something close to amusement. “It sucks.”

Fenpaw nodded at Amberhaze's words on the forest, following on a short while behind her mentor as they started out of the camp entrance. She'd found that when she was first allowed out onto the territory, and could admit that it was nice being out there now compared to the stuffiness of the apprentice's den that she'd hardly left recently. When Amberhaze spoke again Fenpaw's head shot up from where she'd just been watching her paws, and she just let out a quiet "Oh," at first because she couldn't think of what else to say. Then she cracked a tearful smile as she nodded. "Yeah, it does," she added, pausing for a moment to catch up from where she'd stopped still before she asked "Does it get better?"

Amberhaze was glad Fenpaw had reacted so well to her comment. She slowed to brush Fenpaw's shoulder affectionately as she caught up, gazing lovingly at the apprentice. "In a way," she replied, turning away to continue along. "The absence stops grating at you. Slowly, you're able to get through a day without being reminded. But you'll never stop missing her."

She leaned her head into Amberhaze's shoulder a little when her mentor paused beside her, letting her eyes slip shut for a second before she started to walk again. "I don't think I want to stop missing her at least a little bit," Fenpaw mused aloud after a moment of taking in Amberhaze's words. "I don't want to forget her smile and her smell and what she'd say to me. I just want to feel happy remembering her instead of feeling sad all the time." But if her mentor was right, which she always was, there was hope for that.

"Oh, that'll come," Amberhaze assured the young she-cat, brushing her side against Fenpaw's after the apprentice had reacted well to her prior touch. "When I think of my mother and littermates now, it brings me joy. Every now and then I'll feel sad, but it's easier because I know it'll pass." Oh, her life was a unique cruelty, wasn't it? Losing her mother, her siblings, and two of her kits? But she supposed feeling sorry for herself filled no bellies. "And of course, you'll see her again in StarClan." She looked up at the sky was she spoke. "She's not truly gone."
